Moth hatchlings

These moth eggs, deposited five or six days ago,

are hatching. I expected it because the eggs had turned darker by this morning. Photos taken about 7 p.m. In my admittedly amateur experience with insect life cycles, larvae of nocturnal moths do typically emerge in afternoon.

Motorcycle on the Mogollon Rim in AZ. A two-wheeled version of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Honda Africa Twin is perfect for exploring back roads and jeep trails.

Lots of good M's!

I have an idea - bit dark really, will see how it goes.

The moth larvae are pretty cool. One might think that there would be some critters around trying to make a meal out of them.ߙ

Beautiful scenery Terry, may I ask how far this is from where you live?
My Morel picking is not going real well though some are finding buckets full. One person I know found 3 five gallon buckets full. Evidently this defines who "best friends" are as no one has offered to share. Honestly, I don't blame them.

The hillside in the middle distance looks like a burn area, no?

Thanks. They wouldn't make more than an appetizer for most predators. Each was about 2 mm long at most. There are spiders on nearby walls that could use them, but I didn't see any close enough to take advantage. Of course, things can eat larvae at night. The larvae were all gone 24 hours after I took the photos. A few stayed around almost that long and were still meandering on the wall at the 22-hour mark or so.

They do controlled burns continuously (although the area in the picture looks like an "uncontrolled" burn). There were "burn" signs up in a number of areas yesterday. It's an enormous area. The road along the rim is 45 miles.
