Why would I be shooting through a window? That wouldn't give good results at all!

This lens is only useful a handful of times, here is one of them!

That's an excellent shot.

Have you used the Canon 400 DO II ? With the 2XIII attached it makes a pretty good alternative to the 800mm lens.
Half the weight and almost half the price.

When you see my camera gear you'll think I'm a pro.
When you see my photos you'll know that I'm not.

Why I asked. Hoping for some description of how you got the shot. I've shot from several types of aircraft and once or twice got a very nice image through a window. Mostly I shot from open doors in helicopters or light single wing airplanes. The only time I ever had a view of a large cargo aircraft from a small observation craft was closer and, to tell the truth, a little scary and I was just a passenger.

So what were you flying in?

Canons to the left, Canons to the right,
We hold our L glass toward the light,
Digitizing in a snap reflective glory
That will forever tell our imaged story.

Thank you! I also rented the 400 f/2.8 II and actually found the images sharper and more accurate with the 400 + 2x vs the bare 800mm. It was especially a better combo for prop aircraft while using IS mode III.

Ah, yes for some reason everyone seems to think it was an aerial photo although it was taken from the ground. The aircraft was performing a tight turn fairly low over the ground which may give the impression that it's air2air. I've only ever taken a couple of photos through the window of a Cessna.

I would like to nice to open this thread with some sample pictures but alas I don't (yet) own this monster.

I started this thread a decade ago and forgot about it. I did eventually buy the glass.

Here is a video of the moon. 800mm + 1.4x + 2.0x

The camera is on a static tripod. The movement is simply how fast it appears to move across the sky.

The Canon 800mm f/5.6 is an amazing lens, especially for distant wildlife. Almost magical in its abilities, at times. If the photographer's technique regarding stabilization is good, it even performs very well with flying birds. This is a short-eared owl from Ohio earlier this year, in fading day's end light.
