(4 edits in all) | May 17, 2019 21:49 | #28967 So I got a new lens lately, but for various reasons haven't gotten much chance to use it yet. Last weekend my upper front tooth, which had a root canal 35 years ago, decided to chip 50% off. Got a temporary tooth put in on Tuesday and I'm just now feeling good. Last weekend my upper front tooth, which had a root canal 35 years ago, decided to chip 50% off. Got a temporary tooth put in on Tuesday and I'm just now feeling good. I did get out to take a few pictures, but the light was really bad for the most part. Things I like about the Sony FE 100mm GM is it's just insanely sharp. The background obliteration is mostly limited, but it has a look that I like. To be perfectly honest about my primary motivation in getting the 100GM is that I've decided, for quite some time, that I want a three lens prime kit of 24mm, 50mm, and 100mm. There is, of course, a Sigma 105mm, but that is too ridiculously huge for what I want. The 90mm G is another consideration, but I'm fixated on at least 100mm. Other options are the Zeiss Makro Planar 100mm and the CV 110mm, both amazing lenses, but they have no AF. I want my 24, 50, 100 kit to be all AF. Naturally the FE 100 GM is light-limited (max 5.6), so I'll probably be keeping my Batis 135mm for when I want to shoot longer, but need the additional stops. OTOH it's entirely possible that I don't need a faster t-stop than 5.6. Here are a couple of hastily captured images to show a little rendering. The detail the lens picks up in the wood chairs or flower petals is pretty great imo. Although the background blur behind the chairs is subtle, it's also smooth and clean. I hope to give the lens a lot more work tomorrow. ![]() ![]() ![]() Woot for you and new glass. Sorry about the tooth. I'm self medicating a cut gum (flossing error big time)....no fun. flickr

TRhoads Cream of the Crop More info | May 18, 2019 07:34 | #28975 This past week marked the start of my 19th year at my current employer...I tend to make that the week that I update my profile picture for the various places that I have one...and I am learning lighting still, and wanted to play around with the AD400, the new Imaging Edge App on the phone...and mirroring my phone to my new TV...that app made getting myself in front of the camera the right way a lot easier, and it meant I could see the resulting image right away...if only it wouldn't crash so much...anyway..thought I would share one of my favorites, I had to remove my glasses to get the a9 to find my eye, and then without moving much put my glasses back on...at f/1.4 it kept finding the corner of my glasses and that left my eye way OOF...I have never cared for pictures of myself...like most photographers, but I have been trying to learn more about posing methods to improve the look of the person in front of the camera...the Peter Hurley tutorials have been incredibly insightful. Congrats on the new lens You know how anal I am about how OOF foliage renders and you're right, it's really smooth despite the quantity of the blur not being at the level of a really fast f-stop. The thing is because the DOF is larger, you get more detail out of the chairs and pot. Usually when selectively focusing on something outdoors you're trying to balance having enough DOF and detail on your subject without the background getting all gnarly.....Looks like its less of a compromise here. This lens is like having a distance-based Photoshop gaussian blur built into the lens because that’s exactly how it renders. It’s not a proper bokeh, but I do appreciate how that effect has the potential to pop a subject out of its background. Not precisely a ‘3D’ pop imo, but more like a subject cut-out pop. Yeah I was going to make a comment that it looks like a gaussian blur created in post. I don't mean that in a bad way...I often do that in post when I have to stop down in the field to get enough DOF. focalpointsphoto.com

May 18, 2019 08:57 | #28980 From Carson's kindergarten graduation. He's a really emotional guy and was so proud of himself he was about to cry lol. Usually I find kindergarten graduations are kinda petty, but he had a particularly tough year. We started him at the highly stuck up privately school his older brother had been in for 6 years. Carson is a bit more 'unconventional' than his brother, and didn't fit the rigid mold that the head-master (that's what he calls himself) at his school. Instead of trying to work with him, they would deflect on their responsibilities as educators and blame his behavior on everything else and it took a toll on his self confidence. They went as far as to try to get us to test him for behavioral disorders, so we ripped both him and his brother out of that school in the middle of the year and put him in a montessori school where he's been flourishing. Academically, he tested at a second and third grade level. IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/25jVo8vfocalpointsphoto.com
