I have an update on Shadow, the 7-8 month old gray cat here. Saturday night, I was trying to drift off to sleep around 12:30 AM when my wife said, "There's a cat crying outside." I hopped out of bed, opened the window and looked out on the deck with a foot long LED flashlight, where I heard a life or death struggle in the sleeping box I made for these guys last winter. I ran to the back door, went out and pounded on the cage where the struggle was ongoing and hollered for them to get out.
A raccoon and the cat came out and I pounded the raccoon on the head twice with the flashlight as it made an escape, thinking I was surely going to destroy the flashlight. Both of them ran side by side to the other end of the deck where the coon went over the edge and dropped the 12 feet or so to the ground. The cat jumped up on the railing and sat there in pain. He was a mess. When he was chomped on it squeezed the crap out of him and it was a disgusting smell. I put him down on the deck and he staggered off, not to be seen until the next morning, still smelling pretty bad and hurting but he at least had a bite to eat before wandering off again.
As a couple days passed he continues to improve and looks fairly good for what he had been through but I'm not sure there wasn't some permanent damage.
Did I mention I was completely without clothing while I attempted to break up the fight?
Did I also mention I have a security camera which recorded some of the scene? (Which I deleted off the website at my earliest opportunity.)
Needless to say, I am now an avid raccoon hunter.
WOW .... what a wild evening for you and the cat ! I hope that the cat recovers, and thanks for your efforts to save him.
