I would like to share with you all one of those moments I had where you cannot believe what you are looking at through your camera. I was almost shaking......The Lesser Spotted Woodpecker although not the rarest bird I've seen it is certainly one of the most hardest birds to see in the UK. I have only seen them a few times from afar and under a heavy forest canopy. Better still I found a nesting pair. In my 15years bird watching/photography this was my best moment. Although these are heavily cropped photo's and taken with a 600mm + 1.4x TC I was too scared to get too close for fear of frightening and disturbing them. I am confident to say that they were not aware I was watching them. This has really been special for me and I consider it to be a magical moment. They are small woodpeckers about half the size of a great Spotted Woodpecker.

nteresting posturing behavior. It almost looks like they are getting ready to fight.

Cool shot, Shalu. Rushing behavior has always fascinated me...love to watch it.

Great photo!! Are these birds just landing or what?

Great capture, great shot.

Thank you very much for your nice comments, Mike, Melissa, Bob and Ted! Bob, they are performing a "rushing" ritual, literally running on water.

I don't like the 600 III on the R at all. The camera's AF is really bad when dealing with busy backgrounds outdoors, especially if you're trying to focus on a short to mid-distance branch + bird, as the AF just can't find it and instead will grab the background and not let go. Performance with extenders is horribly slow. Numerous times when trying to get a shot of this Bunting, even with the contrasty blue bird directly in front of the camera, it'd just hunt and hunt, from infinity and beyond, back to MFD. I could see the blue blur on the EVF, but the camera had other ideas. I normally don't use the Memory Recall function on my 600, but did for the first time yesterday to ensure I could get focus back within state lines when the R decided to go hunting.

The output from the sensor is so good, the detail and colors, are just amazing, it's a total joy working with the photos in post. If it had stronger AF performance, the R would easily be my first choice for birding.

Oh, that's bad. Any less hunting with plain 100-400 ii? Is the performance on R & 100-400 ii + 1.4x iii horrible slow too, slower than on 5div?
