Those are common here. They're the plainest birds that visit our yard. Not sparrows. Bigger, almost dove size. Their call is plain as well, just a brief chirp. I found the species name once and unfortunately forgot it.

That's a California towhee, as common as sparrow, but not sparrow :-P

Indeed Mike, the other, less common name for it here is the Maned Goose.

I guess being duck sized counts for more than having a goose shaped bill... lol
