This is a Horned Passalus. They always look like they've just had a new wax job to me. :-)

One interesting thing to learn about this creature is it has 17 stridulation sounds that it can emit. Here is a link.

Wow, thanks, Keith! This raises the bug from being just a black beetle to a special and interesting creature.

The link explains that the beetle eats decaying wood. The photo shows it on an old log. I did not notice any galleries there as far as I can remember.
