I'm curious if these trees are hollow or they dig out a cavity inside the tree. Certainly a feat accomplished by a relatively small bird.

The Great Spotted Woodpecker When it comes to creating a nest hole the woodpecker chisels out a cavity within a tree trunk so a partly rotten tree is useful. It may take up to four weeks for a pair of woodpeckers to dig out a nest hole from scratch but the work is shared equally between male and female. I presume this is the case also for the smaller cousin the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.

Lovely photo. My first impression was Wood Thrush. I don't think the Veery is as heavily spotted.

Here's a Swainson's Thrush from a few days ago. It's not a bird I've had much luck with in the past. Hermit Thrushes are far more common here.

We're pretty much past the songbird migration and the shorebirds won't really start arriving until July so this is a hard time of the year to recommend locations. Cape Sable Island and Brier Island are great spots but not the easiest places to get to especially Brier. I tend to stick close to home and have a few favourite local spots.

Thanks Russ. I am staying in Lunenburg for a week, then going to a place called Shag Harbour for a week. The only thing I know about it, is that it is located in the southern part of N.S. Hopefully I will find something to point a camera at, but if not, I could use a rest !

That was my thought, lots of ticks and fleas here in Southern Missouri.
