Not sure on an ID for this one (taken in North Carolina), but it appears to be guarding a brood?....

Very nice shots!

Thought the second shot was interesting because of the good view of the pollen baskets.

Although it looks threatening this semi-active Carder Bee is just reacting to me being too close. I've never been bitten or stung, and like all solitary bees they are excellent pollinators.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (about 1.5x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I'm holding on to the stem of the flower with my left hand, and resting the lens on that same hand to keep the scene steady.

Even though I baited this honeybee they didn't want to let me get close. It took well over an hour to get them acclimated to my presence.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (almost 3x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I'm holding on to the stem of the flower with my left hand, and resting the lens on that same hand to keep the scene steady.

Everyone who views this forum is by definition a admirer of bees, and pollinators in general. We all know how important they are - a threat to bees is a threat to humans and it is a shame to see the danger they (and therefore we) are in. And it is amazing that the general public is neither aware of pollinator's importance nor their danger - and many wouldn't care if they did know. We humans better start realizing that we are less citizens of a country than we are "earthlings" on a planet and the fate of our fellow creatures will have a profound affect on our own welfare. Maybe we can do a small part by forwarding the below links (or similar ones you may find) to friends, etc. [I will now hop off my soapbox. ;-)a]

"The yellow-banded bumblebee, Bombus terricola, is listed as vulnerable to extinction globally on the recently updated International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources Red List of Threatened Species."

A small red wasp nest I saw on my morning walk. It was under a bench, so I'm betting most folks wouldn't sit on the bench for very long.

Terry, I love how you got that egg sitting in the nest cell. Most of the time we just get to see the wasps.
