A rare portrait for me, he was looking toward the camera, spot focus and metering, right between the eyes. He was close, cropped a bit, high, white, overcast sky.

Yes. It is in the Yasuni National Park and the salt lick attracts hundreds of parrots every day. Most of these are different kinds of green parrot, but a few Scarlet Macaws also show up. The pic below gives an idea of what the scene is like. It depicts the cliff above the pool.
