Female red-winged blackbird. She collided with a dock in a constructed wetland where we were hanging out tonight. We fished her out of the water and dried her off. Test flight didn't go well. Collected her from the reeds and placed her in a shrub. She seemed alert although could have any number of injuries. Probably just delayed the inevitable but here's hoping she survives.

Yes, this can be heartbreaking to watch, Mike. I had a family of wood ducks on my pond. I never did find out what got them, but one by one, they all dissappeared.

Thank you for commenting Lee. I thought about not mentioning the loss of the ducklings, but it did happen, and somehow seemed right to include it.

Interesting but sad story, Mike. I hadn't known that Night Herons would attack ducklings. Very pretty photo.

It's interesting Jack, but at one of the big ranches (6000 acres of mostly waterfowl habitat) that I used to photograph at, was full of night herons, and they apparently were killing lots of the ducklings that were hatched there. The owner of the ranch was furious about it, and wanted to get permission from the department of fish & wildlife to shoot them. I'm sure that he never will. I personally, have only seen them grab the babies a couple of times, but I know that it is not uncommon.
