My almost 15yo 70-200 f/4L is getting finicky (Er 001...not communicating with my 5d3) after being a great zoom all these years.

Instead of spending hundreds on a repair I'm starting to kick around the idea of upgrading to either a used 70-200 f/2.8 (non IS) or a used copy this 70-300 (both are somewhat close in price on ebay).

Basically all of the shots I've ever taken with my old 70-200 f/4 are outside of my kids, landscapes/travel, and occasionally wildlife. While the speed of the 2.8 would be a nice luxury, I think the additional reach (100mm) would end up being more "useful" for my style. I don't shoot sports or events inside. I'd imagine the IQ, sharpness, color, etc. on any of the L zooms will be excellent and these two that I'm debating over will likely be the same, and likely better, in that regard.

I'm thinking my main want is fast and accurate focusing in AI Servo.

I'm really starting to lean towards the 70-300! Somebody talk me out of it :-) .

I sold my 70-200 f/4L and bought the 70-300. Extra reach is nice but it is heavier.

Thank you.

Did you notice any difference in autofocus, IQ, etc.?

Seems faster and no loss of IQ.

Just joined the club (like literally just signed for the delivery minutes ago)! Bought a used copy from POTN member ontonagondave.

First impressions coming from a EF 70-200mm f/4 (non-IS)...WOW, this thing is a tank! A little surprised that just an additional 0.75lb feels so sturdier and heavier in my hand. The focus ring in the front will take some getting used to but I'm sure it will become second nature.

Snapped some pics of our Son and our Boston Terrier and I like what I see so far just peeking at the camera LCD.

Images to follow!

OK...I'm loving my new lens! So sharp, fast and accurate, and the colors just pop!

I've had it for a few hours now and here are some from around the house and the pool...
