We are lucky to have swallowtails locally and the fennel plants in the garden are the perfect hosts for the caterpillars. Here is an early instar (about the third skin change I think) of Papilio machaon.

However, to misquote Thomas Hobbes, the life of insects can be nasty, brutish and short. Nature is red in tooth and claw, or in this case in siphon! This is the common damsel bug, Nabis rugosas, having a caterpillar snack.

Nice. I've seen quite a few shriveled up caterpillars this year. I reckon the Assassin Bugs are doing well.
