WOW. Can you do that again?

Thanks. I'll try! It's a shot I've been after for ages. It hovered for just a few seconds. Wish I'd had a faster shutter speed but had no time to think about that.

out of this world. Can you give me a little more detail as to how this was taken and setting please. I am keen to learn and emulate your greatness.

I don’t have any special technique, this hover fly was buzzing around our Shishto plants (that’s the leaf it’s resting on). We have had heavy rains for most of the day, and based on how it was acting I think it was just trying to dry it’s wings. It had moved from leaf to leaf as I approached, but I just moving slowly and chased it around, I guess it decided I wasn’t an actual threat, or stopped caring.

Below is my set up (sorry for the terrible iPhone photo and background mess), Pringle can taped to the flash. Canon RP, full set of extension tubes and the mighty NiftyFifty on those. It was handheld, I used the 5x zoom in the viewfinder to find focus on the eyes. 1/180, f11, ISO 100.

Now where did I put the last Pringles tube .. other manufacturers are of course available.

Did you keep the plastics cap on to act as diffuser?

Yes, but I'm not sure how much diffusion it actually achieves. I am sure if I put something behind the cap it would help soften the light more.

I made one the other day, haven't really figured out how to use it yet. The place I found the instructions said to use a couple of the thin foam circles that come in lens filter kits.

There are many diffusion materials that one could use. One of the simplest is writing paper. Or you could go fancier and use vellum. Another would be the plastic some milk containers are made of. At stationery stores there are lots of products with white translucent material, such as those used in folders or 3-ring binders. Styrofoam plates and drinking cups shaped to your needs can be used too. There are also different kinds of plastic packing material that some have used as diffusers.

Nice clear shot. Those bugs have solved the dilemma of what to do first - consumption or consumation.
