The "miracle" it takes to accomplish this is nothing more than a good 3-stop neutral density filter. Mine is a B&W that I got several years ago for about $100. Without the ND filter, the f-stop would have been around f/20 and the photos would not have been as good.

Thanx for the advice. I will buy myself an ND filter, dig the old lens out of the closet and give it another try....

I am taking delivery of my new 100-400II tomorrow.

So essentially, what you are saying is that you have no experience with this lens, but still you know everything!
You must be the funny guy around here.....ha-ha!

I rented one for two weeks last year.

Also, I trust what the vast majority of users say regarding quality.

I have found in my life, that those who complain the loudest, generally know the least. Good luck.

I never thought of using a 3 stop filter like that. That’ll come in handy for an air show I want to shoot in September.

If you leave the filter on, you'll be shooting jets at 1/640 or 1/800 to keep the ISO below 800. That's what I do, but some of my friends remove the filter when the jets fly so that they can shoot at 1/2000th.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

Great picture catching all of them in one frame!

So there is a back story to this photo.

The Blue Angels were in Corpus Christi TX for an air show. One of the members was a Texas Aggie, so they decided to fly over campus (Texas A&M University) in College Station TX on the way back to their base in FL.

They were so low and close over the football stadium these photos were not even cropped. One pass and they were gone.

/edited to add Texas A&M University

For you non-Americans,

The Blue Angels flew over my little city in Texas. We took some photos.

The end! :-)

Aggie is the nickname for a student or graduate of Texas A&M University (A&M stands for Agricultural and Mechanical, hence Aggie).

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Thanks, Scrumhalf, I knew there had to be some meaning behind it!

Thank you! The nice late afternoon light certainly contributed to bring out the nice color.
