This (bolded) is not the case. If you copy files to a new directory and click the "leave images in current directory" (something like that) all the original raws will be visible and available for other uses.

You can do it with tethered shooting too. Just set it up right from the beginning and all files will be loaded into the same directory as the catalog.

Ah, yes, I haven't been importing into the catalog. Maybe I should start doing that, or maybe there was a reason I don't.

I absolutely need to keep my own directory structure, the C1 structure in 'originals' would be far more of a headache. I also need to see the structure from within C1.

So this is what I have been doing:

If I select a location, I guess I can build my directory structure, but in C1 I don't see that structure under 'In Catalog', instead you see all the images imported.

So that's no good either. But I will keep investigating, I don't see an import into catalog, but leave images in current location. Even if that works, will the 'In Catalog' show me the directory structure?

Thanks for this, this is useful to know. I understand that ‘Syncback Free’ is a third-party app? Or is it part of C1?

It is 3rd party. I just mentioned it in case you didn't have a backup software or the inclination to look for one. I've been using it for a while and although it can take a bit of setting up, it seems reliable which has not always been the case with free backup software.

Not quite sure, if I am understanding you right - but this might work: You can add a folder to your catalog (In library->folders -> right click on the top folder -> add folder). Choose the folder you want and then either import or synchronize the folder. I am doing this only for single folder - there might be a more efficient way to do it for entire folder structures.

Ok thanks, I will look it up as well. Since I migrated from an iMac to a Windows system I’ve been missing Time Machine.

In other news, I’ve just pulled the trigger, yesterday, on C-1: I decided that their Canada Day offer was good enough that I shouldn’t pass it up.

Thanks all for your contributions! We certainly can keep it going to discuss C-1.

I've been using the program for a bit longer now, and found out that I really really hate the spot tool... anyway, in most other ways, it still is better than ACR. Am also annoyed at metadata errors, when the MD misreports the lens, that or inexplicably has multiple labels for the same lens. Anyone else has had that experience?

Also, did anyone ever try to export a Catalog to a Session? Is it possible to do so while keeping adjustments? I didn't find this question being addressed on the Phase One website.

I am using this for getting into the nitty gritty depth of C1: https://rawcaptureguide.com/ebook/ (external link) (actually, I am still using the C1 V11 - but that's close enough).

You are supposed to be able to do this I think. I looked into this in order to keep the adjustments with the raw files, but never actually tried.

OK, I tried and figured it out - at least how I would use it.

You have to select the images to export and you can put them is a 'session'. So the way I create a catalog, I can't export the whole catalog, becasue I import leaving the files in place, so my 'In Catalog' folder is empty.

So anyway, select the images, go File - Export Images - Originals. Then make a folder to put them in and make sure the 'Include Adjustments' is checked. You will then create a session folder with the originals and adjustments, so if you go in there in a session, you will see all files and adjustments.

I've never tried the spot removal tool - I just use the cloning/healing although they are not great. It does OK for me because I will go into PS for anything tricky.

Thanks for both of these posts above - this will certainly help! I'll definitely check out the e-book before too long.

What would you say is the rate of addition of lens profiles? I did notice before too long that some of my lenses were missing i.e. the 35 f2 IS, most EF-M lenses, which is mostly excusable, but now I'm seeing that even newer lenses are missing, such as the Tamron SP 45/85, the RF24-105 and 35... Those are more serious gaps imo.

I don't use them. Usually I don't apply corrections, and when I need to I just do it manually. The manual corrections + keystone corrections seem to be enough for me.

I get the impression that they don't add them for 35mm lenses that often.

Interesting. I'm being slowly convinced of that as well, but it does add time to post-processing... I'm mostly worried about distortion and chromatic aberrations - the rest I agree is fairly to do manually.

CA is pretty well handled by the 'analyze'. I just select all images and then click on the 'analyze in CA corrections and for the most part that takes care of it. The only lenses this does not work that well on, or can 'fail' are my TS-E lenses, but there is an option to add in X and Y shift.

ACR seems to do the automatic correction differently. Seems to be more of a local filter, which can handle odd variations, such as with a shifted TS-E, but also has the potential to go wrong and affect details.

Also, while there is a purple de-fringe, there is no green de-fringe. This is more annoying at times.

Personally, only occasionally an issue for me. I just output a .tiff, and read into ACR as a raw and use the de-fringe there. Would be a PITA for a load of shots though.

Yeah to me there doesn't seem to be much of a point to get C-1 only to have to have ACR anyway as part of your workflow. Still, most of those are relatively small flaws - I still feel like the program really has some staying power, is, certainly for me, the most credible alternative to Adobe CC. I'd just like to see Phase One fix those oversights in the near future.

The spot tool also remains a relatively major irritant, once which I expect would be harder to remedy - though here I can see exporting to TIFF and finishing edits elsewhere to be a good option.
