Only had it a day and it's already at CPS along with the 5D Mark IV "Calibration" terrible soft images and having tested one prior I knew what this lens was capable of! I'll keep both lenses for now and hope Canon release a 90 D with a 30 meg sensor in the coming weeks, pair that with a Canon 100-400 and it will be an awesome Wildlife Combo ! I like to get as close to a subject as possible, I figured the 100-400 has better IQ, IS and Bokeh than the Sigma. I've been using F7.1 and F8 on the Sigma as I find this yields much sharper images but as you can guess in low light it just doesn't cut it!

Sorry to hear that Martin. Certainly goes against the thoughts I shared before. If it's any consolation, I also had similar issues with my first copy of the Sigma 150-600. I could not get good results at all...maybe got a 5% keeper rate (and that may be overstating it) the entire weekend I tried it out. I took well over 1000 pictures with it at an airshow and most of the images were soft and out of focus. I believed there was a problem with the lens itself so I sent it back and got a different copy. I used the replacement copy last weekend at an airshow with much, much better results...probably attributable to the recommendations for set up from the black fox. With this copy, I believe the missed shots can be chalked up to technique at the longer focal ranges as the 100-400 with extender was perfect all weekend. Hopefully, when you get your 100-400 back from CPS, it provides you the results you were expecting.

previous to having the sigma C I had one of the very first 150-600 sport lenses in a canon mount , had it for just under 3 years during which time I also went through various canon bodies from 80d to 1D4 and never quiet got the sparkle I was hoping for blaming the bodies in the main , just before the warranty ran out (3 years) I sent it back to sigma for a check over . they came back that they could not get the resolution right and the lens had to go back to Japan . four weeks later I got it back same serial number but I will hazard a guess that they had simply replaced it with a brand new lens and put the serial number on that .
I still wasn't happy though with its performance and sold it on soon after .
having now changed to Nikon I bought the sigma C around xmas time BNIB with 3 year warranty and straight away there was a amazing difference in i.q . now tried it on several nikon bodies and its good on all of them . its a keeper for the time being anyway .. I do however have a hankering for a nikon 300mm f4 plus t.c which is a itch waiting to be scratched . had one before and looking through back files they were superb

Without bending the Topic too much in the wrong direction yesterday I got the 5D and 100-400 back and to my surprise the 5D IV got a new CMOS Sensor ASS'y and a PCB ASS'y and I have no idea why? The lens had an AF adjustment and a couple of new parts. It's sharp and on par with the Sigma, I guess I'm very lucky to have such a fantastic copy! I'm heading to the coast in the coming days and shall put both lenses to the test, also have a 7D Mark II which will give me some extra reach! Tested the sigma on a 1.4x III converter but forget it, af is so slow!

Anyways, here's a Kestrel which I took from the hide while waiting for the foxes to appear!

I have had this lens for about a year now & it drives me crazy!

I obtain such mixed results with it, more so than any other lens. Some days I can go out & take a set of images & get a 99% keeper rate but on other days a 1% rate! I just cannot work out why. I have tried keeping notes of everything such as lighting, sun direction, time of day etc etc. but it doesn't add up. I have the dock & have used all manner of permutations to no avail.

On its day I get sharp fantastic pictures but then, such as last weekend at an airshow, I end up deleting literally thousands!

I can't pull my hair out as I haven't got any left...seriously though this lens seems to be the subject of so much more discussion than any other so it can't be just me!

One question that I do have, it might be obvious but I'm clutching at straws, is this: when I select C1 or C2 can/ should I leave the normal OS switch in position 1 or 2 OR is it necessary to switch it to off? ie does the custom mode override or replace the normal OS...

TIA

Here are settings users here have recommended and has helped. You will need the dock however.

Thanks. I'll try again with those.

Any idea on my Q re the setting of the Custom sw with or without the normal OS on or off?

It is recommended to switch it to off when using a tripod/monopod as the glass elements inside will move and cause blur. Otherwise I personally always leave it on because it pretty heavy and awkward hand holding.

Have you contacted Sigma? They can calibrate it to your camera body but you will need to send both in.

Thanks again for the reply.

I'm probably confusing matters by the way that I am phrasing it but my question is this:

When selecting Custom 1 or 2 to on is it necessary to TURN OFF the NORMAL OS switch? OR do you leave it at either 1 or 2 AND select on the C1 or C2 switch.

TIA

I leave mine set to OS2 at all times ,your overthinking it. I leave o.s switched on even when using a tripod as with wildlife we are still moving the lens .. if I was doing landscapes with everything locked down it would be off though
