It's very difficult for me to NOT spend most of my time at a race panning. Now I just get the shots I need for the paper then spend the rest of the time panning. This is a long thread and admit I didn't read all. I'm sure there has been some discussion on what makes a good panning shot or how much of the shot needs to be in focus before it's just a "missed" shot. For me, not much has to be in focus. The whole idea of the panning shot is to blur & show motion.

Anyway, one of my favorite things to shoot are open roof racers. You usually have a chance of actually getting the driver in focus rather than just the number, or front end. Here are a few shots from today's Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix.
