Neat! No swimming there then?
Correct! But that's not really the reason. Freshies are half the length of salties* and quite timid. They live in waterholes and plunge pools that people swim in all the time. Most people have no idea they're there as they hide away in quiet corners or poolside vegetation. Only rarely do they bite, a bit like a dog bite, and only if severely provoked and threatened, such as when people poke them with a stick to get them to move or get right up close for a photo.
The pool is actually closed for swimming so the two species of critically endangered bats that roost in the cave to the left of the photo are not disturbed. But I'm happy that this freshie can rule his pool without having to hide from swimmers. I guess he'll be there till at least the end of the dry season later this year.
*No sane person would contemplate entering the water, including fresh water, if there was even the remotest chance of a saltwater crocodile being there.
