I have the original Canon 7D which should be shooting in continuous mode, 8 shots/sec but I am not getting that speed, or perhaps my perception. I have gone through the menus but don't see any setting that would increase the shots/sec. Looking for any guidance for any special settings that increase the shots/sec. I shoot mostly kids sports. I do have the drive mode set to H. Appreciate any input.

Thank you,

Tom

Are you in High Speed or low?

There was a thread with the copy of the manual on this.

I had everything from the link but now am wondering if the CF card is not adequate. It is an old CF card. I will have to replace with a high speed card and try again. The thread you listed mentioned a high speed CF card...

Make sure things like auto lighting optimizer, lens corrections, and high iso noise reduction are turned off. Also see if you camera is set to release priority or focus priority in the settings.

Peripheral Illumination Correction was enabled, I disabled. Everything else was disabled. I don't have a release priority or focus priority option in settings.

I don’t think the card will slow you down until the camera’s buffer fills up. If you try setting to JPG only (and try small image size) you should be able to discount the card speed as being the issue.

What happens when you hold the shutter down? Do you get one shot, do you get a few shots a second, etc? To get count, you should record the camera during the bursts and then run the audio through a graph analyzer, you will see the shutter clicks in the audio graph (waveform), and then can count how many frames a second.

You can shoot a smartphone on stopwatch mode. You will get a very accurate reading of time between shots

To get the full speed, doesn't the shutter speed have to be at least 1/800 or even faster? I thought that I had read that....

I get continuous shooting but it isn't close to 8/sec. I listen to other photographers online shooting continuous and you can definitely hear the fast buzz of the shutter where on my camera, I can distinctly hear each shutter click.
