aezoss saw subject. This young girl with the skin problem seemed very reserved. She seemed isolated from the other children, but yet still part of the group.

Yes, all that comes through very well, and the girl isn't looking at whatever holds the attention of all the others, but the shot doesn't make me, the viewer, feel alone, which I believe is the theme of the thread. That's why I questioned its placement here.

Yes, I probably should have posted it elsewhere. But, for me, the image provokes a strong sense of loneliness. Call me weird. -?

I happen to agree with you.

I think it's a pretty good image, but for me it doesn't invoke too much of a sense of loneliness on it's own, knowing the story behind what you saw before the shot makes more sense, but for me it doesn't come through clearly in the image.

This thread is about shots that make you feel alone - the title doesn't mention loneliness. They are two very different things IMO.

Will it be all right with you if I just call you empathic, because I think that's what's going on?

Here's the distinction. Some images that reveal an emotional state arouse the same emotion in me, and others don't. A picture of someone being hateful, let's say it's a bully throwing rocks at a child, doesn't make me feel like a mean, angry person. I might react instead with horror and disgust. A picture of a loving couple doesn't make me feel more loving; it's more like "How sweet!" High-fives among the winning team after a game: I can see that they're proud, but I don't feel pride in their success.

Other emotions in pictures of strangers are more contagious. One is joy. A kids' party with great big excited smiles can leak cheerfulness into me. A sweaty, exhausted marathoner struggling to keep running: I might participate somewhat in that person's determination.

Most images in this thread don't actually make me feel alone, although many convey solitude. It seems to me that creating an image that will make a viewer feel like the person in the image isn't easy at all.

Thanks for the distinction! You make me think. I never feel lonely but I can feel solitude deeply and feel good about it.

Thanks, everybody for the comments. I appreciate them all.

OhLook, I understand completely where you are coming from. It is interesting that you mentioned empathy. I had struggled on whether to use that connection in my previous reply. For me, looking at the girl, I found myself feeling alone...for her. So yes, empathy definitely is weaving through the emotions/feelings for me.

But, by the title of the thread, I take it that the images should be those that make "you", the poster, feel alone. Not necessarily the viewer.

It's all good. I love the brain/heart pickings. :-)

I beg for absolution. Probably the best I can do is to try to make you feel lonely.

The TS made it pretty clear what his intentions were for this thread in his second post...

Come on i bet half the pictures we take reflect some kind of loneliness.

These 2 from my recent trip to Australia definitely made me feel alone but in a very good way.
