Why are these birds hated so much?

Yes, I was wondering that too. I saw them in NZ and they seemed pretty benign to me. Attractive too.

Why are these birds hated so much? I have never seen these birds before......

They lay their eggs and raise their chicks on open grassy fields, including football fields and next to paths and roads, and dive-bomb with their spurred wings anyone, including kids, who dares walk near their 'nest', which of course you can't see until you're right next to it. There are a lot more of them around now too, since the cane toads that arrived here about 15 years ago have killed off all the goannas that once feasted on plover eggs and chicks.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Cool shot, Richard. I was wondering why the bird looked so big. Ha, ha...didn't realize it was covering the little ones.

Thanks Mike. You can see some little spare legs under the skirt of feathers.

They aren't popular here, but mainly due to their spurs on wing tip and their very bold dive bombing practise.
They can be quite scary and make you wonder if you're going to get hit
Wife won't walk to letter box (200 metres) when they're nesting or have babies as they are very aggressive.
If has to go, she takes an umbrella.
They're also called spur-winged plover here.
This shows a photo of one with its wings and spurs extended.
