Well I used my camera again. Kinda been awhile, last pictures on the card were from February.

Last Friday night we did a live burn training with the fire department. A local farmer donated a house to us for training. Spent several weeks running different training nights, and then on Friday spent the night doing live fire events. At midnight the house was set on fire and burned down. It was a late night (I hit the bed at 4am), but it was a great night and made for some great pictures.
I am a captain on the Support Operations Response Team (SORT) and was training members on Accountability. Accountability is run out of Rescue 12, which is our "toolbox on wheels". It has the light tower, so at night events it's up front. I was able to take lots of pictures while still keeping an eye on my trainees. I would have liked to use a tripod, but I was already carrying my camera, flash, two cellphones, radio, pager, squincher packs, flashlights, headlamp, and batteries. Plus need to keep my hands free to help anyone with gear if needed.

A couple of favourites.

The Chief manning the Blitzfire monitor. There was a wooden utility shed to the right that needed to be kept intact. I loved the light with this one! He was staying still, and I was able to lean on a porta-tank for stability.

Full burn. Guy out front is Jeff, a territory manager for Task Force Tips (fire equipment suppliers). He's a friend of the chiefs and comes out to our live burns. Helps out as an instructor, and lets us demo new equipment.

I can't stand jogging, everything is so slow and boring. Bike riding is much better and easier on those knees too.

On Sunday, I went on first bike ride for while with my 10 yo son. It was about 20 km long with some hilly bits - It was the first time that I was struggling to keep up with him, the little bugger.

Ooof, I needs to gets fitter.

I love taking pictures of fire. I really, really love taking pictures of fire at night! And silhouettes are awesome when it's a burning building in the background.

I started going to the gym back in May. The Town of Petrolia pays for Y memberships for all of its employees and full time volunteers, this includes the fire department. So I joined up and have been keeping up with going regularly. I love lifting weights (cable machines so far), but hate most forms of cardio. Treadmills make me seasick and elliptical machines usually aren't the right stride for me and hurt my back. I use a spin bike or arc trainer for warm up. Rowing is pretty decent. But I get bored really fast! So I've been doing the aqua fit and aqua walk programs. I love being in the water, it can be a decent workout, and it's not boring.
There was open swim after aqua fit tonight. There was one guy doing laps in the fitness pool so I had the therapy pool to myself. I spent 10 minutes sitting in the jets, and then I spent 30 minutes just floating. I'm really good at floating. Just went around in circles in the "current", occasionally bumping into a wall.
I do need to get out biking more.

I posted 175 pictures on Facebook from the burn house. These two got the most responses.

This is Mason. His dad, in the grey t-shirt, is a former member. They came out to watch some of the exercises.

Group shot of crew that was there, about half the department. This was shared on the departments Facebook page and it really got a lot of attention.

I have trouble with treadmills but as long as I can touch either the front or one of the bars, I'm fine. Its a spacial thing I think. My body says I'm running but my inner ear says I'm standing still. Touching the side gives another data point that I'm really standing still and all is well. Elliptical machines are a total no-go. The geometry is totally wrong for me and really screw with my knees. I'm 6'5" and even adjusting them at their max stride, it's completely wrong.

I have a bike. It's in my garage. I try to ride only with people who know CPR.

I was never a jogger.

I haven't been on a treadmill or elliptical at this gym yet. Years ago I had a membership to another gym. On the main floor they had all the weights and cable machines in one room that had a couple of windows on one wall. Group activity rooms on the far side of the building, on the other side of the locker rooms. No windows there. Upstairs they had all the cardio machines and mats. The ceiling was relatively low, the walls/floor/ceiling were rather dark coloured, and there were small tv's hanging from the ceiling. 10 minutes on a treadmill would have me flat out on a mat, trying not to throw up. I think the closed in aspect of the room really contributed to my seasickness.

As for the elliptical, the stride was never right for me. I could never stand up straight enough to take stress off my lower back. Everything from my mid-back down was stressed and just not in a proper, ergonomic position.

I use the spin bike for a warm-up, it's ok. I am not as comfortable on it as I am on my own bicycle, but it doesn't hurt. I think it's probably because they are more designed after road bikes and I am used to my mountain bike that has a wide handle bar, and wider set pedals.

I have been enjoying the rowing machine and probably should be spending more time on it. There are two of them, and they both are right in front of the window bay, which looks out onto a field.

View out the window. There's a wild turkey out there.

I got really drunk on wild turkey a long time ago. It was one of those drinks that convinced me to stop drinking.

I never heard anything good about wild turkey, so I never tried it. I never tried a gym. Too many sweaty people touching everything.
