Some photos from the Monterey Aquarium. Shooting conditions were difficult due to low lighting and thick glass. I really enjoyed the jellyfish. I hadn't seen them before this.

HI,

For a shot like this, waht is your AF mode and focus points mode ? are you focussed on the eye for this shot ?

Manual focus on the eye , and turn slowly the cam to get the tail also in focus.

This may be kind of a vague question, but with this camera, do you feel it is easier to recover lost detail in blown highlights or deep blacks?
Obviously there has to be some detail left to recover.
I would have to guess the blacks would hold more potential detail.
I ran into this situation over the weekend while shooting some race cars in the pit area that were beside the hauler with a canopy over the top so it was very shaded but then you still have a white trailer in the background in full sun so that wanted to blow out easily.
Any opinions are appreciated.

General rule with digital: Expose for the the highlights. That is, don’t let the highlights get blown out, otherwise there will be no detail to recover in post. Shadows and dark areas, on the other hand, are a little easier to recover details from if they are a little dark.

In actual shooting, I often use negative 0.5 to negative 1.0 exposure compensation to prevent blowing the highlights. If that’s not enough, then I’ll take 3 exposures (over, under, and in the middle), then combine them in post to capture both highlight and shadow detail.

That is what I ended up doing for the most part. I think I was between 1 & 1 1/2 stops under and still had a little bit of blown highlights. Hadn't really run into this issue previously.

I hope you guys don't mind if I post without a photo, but I just unboxed a new 5DIV late yesterday and have nothing post worthy. I'm still waiting for my RRS plate to mount the camera to the tripod and have just been banging around the house and outside a little just setting dials, reading the manual and goofing on my new body. Wanting to try my first milky way shot with it soon.

I really like the focus and the high ISO performance. The colors seem richer than on my 5DII also. Headed to the mountains with it hopefully Thursday.

Anyway, I'm sure you all understand my excitement. You have all been there.
