We dropped by the Mt Coot-tha Botanic gardens in Brisbane this morning, so I could test how the Canon Extender EF x2.0 Mk II would play with the Canon 400mm F5.6 L lens, by taking photos of a Grebe nest some 35 metres away from the edge of the lake.
I used the 7DII and EOS R bodies, shooting from the same location, tripod mounted, remote release in Live View (7DII) and Silent Shutter on the EOS R.
I was impressed with the overall image quality and sharpness at 800mm for both cameras. You could clearly see the difference in pixel pitch (aka image size) between the 7DII (4.1um) and the EOS R (5.34um).
In PS CC, I measured the (length) number of pixels between the same two points on each image and the difference was approx. 25% longer in favour of the 7DII.
Operating the EOS R was a pleasure; I could drag the AF point in real time, to place it on the bird’s head as it moved, at x10 magnification, making it a very intuitive operation. I have the M-Fn Bar set to cycle between x1, x5 and x10 magnification so a simple tap just cycles through these values.
The 7DII threw me a little as it does not have a touch screen, but it felt reassuringly chunky and solid. There was something very familiar and reassuring with the 7DII, as I guess I have some 10 years’ experience with Canon DSLR’s.
All in all, a very productive day out and a wonderful experience to observe the behaviour of these feisty little birds going about parenthood.
