So you counter a negative personal opinion with one of your own? -?

That was the point...

I don't understand this trend for "Ultra-wide angle Ultra-slow shutter speed" panning shots. To me the images just look like a blurry mess.

I personally agree with you, as I don't like to see a panning shot without some sharpness in the subject...

And to me they look beautiful and interesting.

It's the tight crop side-on pans that are monotonous and boring.

Isn't there some saying about opinions?

...but we clearly all have differing tastes!

I agree with you...To me, the whole point of panning is to show motion by focus locking on your subject, to get it sharp (or some part of it) while the rest of the image is in a blur.
To have an ultra wide image of blurry mess with the subject too small to make out any sharpness doesn't work for me..

Yes and no ...

Midgeman's pictures are what it's supposed to be (in my opinion): sharp subject, moody background, picture tells a story.
The latest trend of going so slow and wide in your panning speed that hardly anything is recognizable in the picture, or having to look for 5 minutes to find a car isn't my cup of tea either. There's a bunch of photographers posting that stuff on Instagram lately, after a while it just hurts your eyes.

I tend to shoot wide pannings also but always make sure my car/subject is sharp and recognizable, even at (very) low shutter speeds ... just to avoid that blurry mess.

It stems from what your goal is. If what your goal is to match the images you like best, the ones we see day in and out here, which are technically well done... then thats what you will gravitate to.

On the other hand there are those who try to see that same situation in their own light, present them in a manner that isn't a duplicate of what others have done, that is another approach.

Only panning I've done recently... 24mm, f4.5, 1/15 sec

I'm sure we could discuss the topic until the end of time, but what's clear is we all like what we like. In this instance, that doesn't make it right or wrong. It's obvious I prefer the extreme. Others prefer different. What else can be said?

Not much :).
We all have our preferences, and thank God (or who/whatever) for that ... photography would be boring if we'd all do and like the same.
