After I updated mine and was sitting in a dark bedroom watching TV, I pointed it at the TV. It highlighted an eye instantly and every time the scene switched to the other person, it picked up the eye instantly. I had a Sony A7R III and I'm impressed by the new R firmware already.

I did the same thing on an iPad nonetheless this morning. With Youtube TV. In the SMALL window. Impressive indeed.

A sparrowhawk (female) caught a rather slow dove by my greenhouse door and took it to the end of the garden to have it for lunch. Could just get the lens out of the bathroom window enough to photograph the proceedings without disturbing the sparrowhawk. Had to switch to silent shutter as even the very quiet click of the R appeared to be spooking the sparrowhawk. I was also trying to focus through a wind-blown tree in my optical pathway. Couldn't have done this without the R IMHO (I've tried and failed in the past with my 80D). It has the 1.4 firmware, but I wasn't in eye-tracking mode before anyone asks.

Set of 6 in my Flickr album (external link) if you want more gorey shots.

If there is anyone who doesn't already know all about the firmware thing, here are a couple of links. The Canon site, and a how to.

This camera is terrible. Canon should pull it before it kills the entire company.

Not wrong there... It's so bad that it even impact other lines... My 6D and 7Dii are worse now than they ever were.

Curious ..

Did the previous firmware update instructions included putting the camera in P mode and removing the lens?

I don't remember all I did a few months ago, but the P mode part didn't ring a bell.

I didn't charge 100% and was sure 89% was ample. I noted the energy use, which was only 2% down to 87% when the update finished. I suppose 2% is a fair draw for such a brief time of operation.

Well I broke down today and picked one up this evening.Too dark to shoot so I took a shot of Mr Lake Trout. DO 400II with 2X @ ISO 16,000. SS was 1/80. Good thing for IS. It was so nice not to have to MFA. :-D

This combo will be tough to BIF with I think but I really go it for stills. I'll see what both this and my 100-400II do with out and the 1/4 TC's. I've seen the examples in these threads so it can be done.

Nice & congratulations.

No MFA'ing is such a bonus. Birding's not so easy but at least when it locks in, the focus is usually bang on :-)
