In-camera free lens.

What does this mean?

As I understand it...

Free lensing is when one takes two tripod mounted photos of a subject. One in focus, the other oof. Then the two images are layered in Photoshop and opacity adjusted to taste.

I did this using open shutter technique. In this case I opened the shutter, counted a few seconds then turned the lens out of focus, waited a few more seconds and closed the shutter.

I much prefer to do things with the camera rather than the computer when possible. :-)

Thanks for the explanation. I have tried this techniques a few times, without knowing what it is called. I wasn't all that happy with the results I was getting.

I think it's one of those things that when it works it's great, when it doesn't not so much. Above, the black-and-white entitled at the heart of it, is also done using in camera free lens.

I thin k it is a bit like zooming while pressing the shutter, eventually you work out what works and what doesn't and under what conditions. Fortunately, it is much cheaper to experiment in digital than it was in film! :D
