Which post are you referring to?

#1, 2 & 3 all seem to lack detail in the shadows but again I think it's more the speed of the lens more than anything else. For instance at f/1.4, for example, there would be 8 times as much light which would be the same difference as going from 60th of a second to 500th of a second. You would capture much more light at 60th of a second than you will at 500th allowing the capture of more detail in the shadows. Not a problem, the shots are excellent I was only referring to the capability of the setup.

Ahh. I wasn't sure if you were commenting on mine or someone else's. Thanks for the compliment. I'm happy with them considering this is my third time shooting a band or people in general.

1, 2 & 3 had a single spot light on them that dropped off quickly. No ambient light to speak of. In order to not overexpose their faces I shot at -2 2/3 EC. Would that explain part of the lack of shadow detail?

I'd love a RF 70-200 2.8L but can't justify it for just playing around. I've always been interested in the benefits of fast lenses other than focus speed and shallow depth of field. Didn't know shadow detail was one of them.

Band info added to the original posts.

Please don't take me wrong the shots are excellent. Yes, the spotlight will have that effect of dropping off light quickly. It's actually an effect I try for in many shots and will post-process them to make the background fall off to black to make the artist stand out in the shot. It was more a comment on your equipment that I have interest in and I was just analyzing any issues that might arise. I shoot with a lot of primes from f/1.2 - f/1.8 but also use mostly zooms in daylight which are only as fast as f/2.8 and there is a lot of difference between them but too be expected.

Invasion; a Van Halen tribute band. The smoke machine, while cool looking, made shooting photos a pain.

That's a good looking amount of sharpness for f/1.4 and f/2.0

Very nice

Thanks! I was pleasantly surprised how well continuous AF worked in this case.

From a FloydVoid, a Pink Floyd tribute band, concert. I really like Jimi Hendrix and the colors play in this shot.

Shot with the RF 24-240 in Tv, auto ISO and -2 2/3 EC.

Picked up the 100mm f2 USM lens and had the chance to test it out; I really like it!
