Mike,

Did you happen to read the PM I sent you yesterday?

In it, I gave you the name of a friend of mine who is in the Tetons right now, and has gotten onto some excellent Moose and Elk opportunities. . You can find him where I said, and send him a DM to find out where he's been shooting. . He posts super-current same-day or next-day images, so if he's posted something you know he JUST took it and that the same opportunity will be there for you.

I figure if an 81 year old man get get pics like he is getting, then you'd surely be able to get the same kind of goodness while you're there!

.

Yes Tom I did. It was a big help. Thank You !!!

Tom

The moose were in 2 areas

It was just a matter of going to the campground or the marsh areas by the Moose Junction turn out and marsh areas by visitors center to see them.....morning and late in the afternoon and they could be seen. The bulls were very camera shy. Had to go find them by the campground area's

The black bear was a lucky shot. Rangers closed the roads when ever a bear was spotted. I was driving by and saw 15 cars stopped. Could not get by and they said a bear was eating berries. He was very elusive and was gone in less than 5 minutes......zero grizzly opportunities in Glacier. Rangers said they see 1 or 2 a year by jenny lake areas. Almost all black bear sightings for Grand Teton

Could not get back into Yellowstone yesterday morning. Pass was Closed with 4-5" of snow. There was 2" on the ground at the south gate where I was at. Was snowing in Jackson at 10AM so I got out before they closed Teton pass. It was snowing on the pass when I crossed but nothing was sticking to road yet

glad I got out

That is why even with a 100-400II and 1.4xIII, I still haven't gotten rid of my copy. :)

I have mixed feelings about getting rid of it, primarily due to being able to use the 1.4x with it and get decent AF speed on my mirrorless, giving me 840mm that I cannot get in the 100-400 without a 2X, and the 2/3 stop hit.

I think I will keep my 100-400 version 1 as well. I did not even take it out this trip. It Just sat. I dont think I could get more than $700 for it so I will keep it as well....If wifey wants to come along then I have one for her to use...I use the 100-400 at weddings a lot. For ceremonies outside, i use it for rings going on and close tight shots of the couple during vows....so it still comes in very handy

But for wildlife...I can really frame things with this 150-600 and its nothing to go to 6400 ISO on the 5D4 and 1Dx2....I think the 150-600 is a better way to go for wildlife. Didnt get a change to do any BIF shots with it

Mike,

It's great to see that you did so well and found great critters to shoot! . Wish I could've tagged along.

Also glad to hear that you got out in time - it's a looooooooonnngggggg way around if the normal routes are all closed off.

I got out just below Idaho falls at the Teton pass. It was 9 hours back to Coeur D Alene.....the drive sucked. Pass dumps you really east and close to Utah/Wyoming/Idaho border area........Hated the drive back. I/15 going back to I/90 is miserable. 200 miles of nothing

I've had to do that before when snow kept me from going back up through Yellowstone. Fortunately, it's only happened once. I've been lucky.

You said you lived in Idaho, but I didn't realize you were right there in Coeur D'Alene. I pass through there all the time. Passed through CDA just yesterday, in fact. Your town is quite convenient to a heck of a lot of good wildlife photography venues. Lucky you!

Yes we feel very fortunate. Glacier is about a 4 hour drive and the Bison national range is 2.5 hours away......I will be going to glacier a lot more than Yellowstone. saved me about 4 hours for the drive and plenty of grizzly opportunities. Grizzlys are in Yellowstone but not easy to find as the place is just so big. Too much ground to cover for a few opportunities

Honestly, It was really a PITA for Yellowstone, As soon as ANYTHING is spotted then its 20 cars and a traffic jam. Everyone has it figured out. I will go to Alaska next year for sure for Grizzlys and bear shots. Its almost worth the $500 to fly into them v/s driving all over the dam parks and fighting the crowds

Still looking for bear opportunities for Canada areas closer to where I live

Jasper.

A close friend of mine goes there specifically for bears and you wouldn't believe how well he does.

I'll send you some info via PM so you can see his stuff.

Yeah I agree. Its a really nice lens

I think if I were on a tripod more than I am.....then the sport is definitely worth the extra $$$$. It was really nice to hike around and not carry the weight

I always see a lot of guys with 500 F/4's and 1.4 TC's at Yellowstone on tripods. Thats 700mm at F/5.6

The sigma puts you at 600 at F/6.3 right out of the box. When you add a TC thats 840mm...thats some serious reach...I was at 1600-2500 ISO when the light started to get low. zero issues

I got snowed out Wednesday. Could not get into Yellowstone. Last week would have been perfect

Next time

Gonna take Toms Advice and head to Jasper next spring. Would love to get some Mama and baby grizzly shots

My next big wildlife trip. They say May is ideal
