Travelling on the A338 near Fawley and Brightwalton in Berkshire UK yesterday. I came across this isolated memorial on the side of a grassy field.
Regrettably, I had to use my phone camera due to a battery failure in my main camera.

The links are interesting - please find a few minutes to read.

Interesting and sobering.
Storey of the sons of the survivor adds to this.
Horses in that war was a well used tactic.

Hi Dave. Just how many names on that memorial?

as mentioned, 58,318... in order of their deaths, starting at the mid-point of the the two walls...

one end points towards the Washington Monument the to the Lincoln Memorial...

no fedgov money was spent on the memorial. Jan Scruggs started the fund-raising in 1979 with $2,800 of his own money...

Maya Ling's design was chosen from over 1,400 proposals submitted...

i had heard (but can not confirm now) that there 30 sets of brothers, 8 women and 6 men from a town of only 500, whose names are on the wall...

there are three sets of fathers and sons on the wall...

the first American killed in vietnam wasnt added until 1999, because he was murdered by another American. i just learned that looking for the number of brother sets...

Not sure who the little red gumboots belonged to, but made for a very powerful image when I visited a couple of weeks back.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

The Princeton Battle Monument

The Monument commemorates the January 3, 1777 Battle of Princeton, and depicts General George Washington leading his troops to victory and the death of General Hugh Mercer. It stands 50 feet (15 m) tall and was inspired by carvings on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Thanks for the facts Dave, you've done your research here. 58,318 remembered here, the grief spreads beyond that for a few generations to come. Just ask the grieving if it was worth the sacrifice, it changed their lives forever.

Looks exactly like it did when I was there six years ago, and back then it looked exactly as it did 20 years prior to that.

With the ridiculous prices they charge there, it's amazing the thing wasn't finished years ago.

Sorry to editorialize. Really nice shot!

You're exactly right and I share your sentiment. That's exactly how I felt when I was there. It will look the same 20 years from now.

Yep, I was there in 2003 and nothing looks to have changed, going to be the next century before they get it like the model.

My understanding is that they turned down federal funds to complete the project because they were afraid the government would then tighten the purse strings and shut down the project...
