Lovely capture Mike, I guess the bird is saying "expose for the underwing shadows and not the bright background" which you did.:-)

Cheers

Thank you very much Dennis. For me, white birds always present a challenge. I had been photographing ducks in flight, when this egret popped up out of nowhere. I quickly turned the shutter speed dial with my forefinger and the aperture dial with my thumb. I didn't take my eye off the camera, and simply guessed how many clicks to turn these two dials. It sure is wonderful when I get lucky!!

I have a weird way of setting my exposures for BIF shots. I take an exposure reading off the sky and over expose that reading by 1 1/3 stops for all my so call "normal birds". For black birds such as crows, I over expose by 2 1/3 stops. And finally, for white birds, such as egrets, I underexpose by about 1 full stop (these sometimes varies a bit).

So you see Dennis, I wasn't even thinking about exposing for the under-wing shadows. I simply spun a couple of dials and got lucky, ha, ha.

5DIV ~ 100-400II

A few pelagic birds (brown boobies I believe) at sea, these guys were flying into 40 mph winds, when they decided to turn downwind, there was no way I could keep up tracking them... Think Peregrine Falcon fast
They would dive into the ocean after fish from the wake of ship, others would follow, just in case it missed. They sounded a lot like seguls.
After about 3 hours I gave up shooting, I had enough, but they kept coming, amazing birds

Fantastic capture Sha, fascinating behavior.
Do they try and exchange the catch while flying?
Happy trails.

Thank you very much, Paul, yes, it is their typical ritual of food exchange during breeding season. They do this between male and female parents as well as between parent and juveniles.
