Trying to decide between 5d IV or EOS R! Help!! If I go with R, Which Rf Lens should I go for? 50mm is my favorite focal length, 85mm is my favorite look of portraits, and I love the idea of the 28-70 being so versatile!

Here is my experience having (had) BOTH the R and the 5D4...

Bought the 5D4 to have “the best” I could afford. Never really pushed it’s limits. Used it for landscape, wildlife, and real estate work.

Bought the R because I like cutting edge and new stuff. Figured I would keep both and use the “better” camera for whatever task I was going to do.

Three months went by and I never touched the 5D4, more importantly never missed it, and loved the R so I sold the 5D4.

Don’t be put off by the “It can’t do sports” or “It can’t do BIF” folks. Granted it isn’t as good at those things as other cameras due to a “lessor” AF system it still certainly CAN do them.

If fast action sports and BIF is your PRIMARY photography to the near exclusion of almost everything else. It probably isn’t the camera for you, but then again neither is the 5D4 (as far as I am concerned) without the benefit of a crop factor and lower density of pixels, unless you have the coin for a 600mm lens you probably would be better off with a 7D2 for those things.

If you want a “Do everything, most things well, some things awesome, and a few things adequately” camera, than the EOS R totally fits the bill and for about $800 LESS than the 5D4.

I don’t think enough can be said about the lack of needing to Micro-focus adjust lenses, that alone increased my satisfaction with bird shots. I’d rather have my keepers be perfect focus, even at a lower rate than have a higher keeper rate of shots that don’t quite nail focus because the adjustment was off.

Other random thoughts...
-AF with 2x TC on the 100-400mm? No problem on the R - can’t do it on the 5D4.
-Want the reach of a crop? 1.6x mode on the R that several folks have said result in better shots than simply cropping in on FF shots.
-Knowing exactly how your shot will look before hitting the shutter. Instantly see how changing exposure settings will effect the shot beforehand

As for lenses, the kit RF 24-105mm F4L is a great lens. I have decided to go to the RF lenses and am selling off most of my EF lenses. Just received the RF 15-35mm and planning on picking up the 28-70 F2.0L. With these I am expecting to sell off my EF 100mm F2.8L macro, EF 11-24mm F4L, EF 50mm f/1.8, Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 G2, and probably my Tamron 85mm f/1.8 as well.

I expect I will keep EF 70-200mm and EF 100-400 II for now, no RF options at this point.

Here are a few shots from my first attempt at BIF with the he R (before the firmware updates that have only improved AF tracking)

Good points. A more experienced birder/sports shooter will find the R less challenging. It might be a little frustrating to those starting out.

If 50 mm is your favourite focal length, and 85 mm your favourite portrait FL, there is only 1 option in my book:

Go EOS R with RF 50L and RF 85L. The RF 28-70L is great, but 50 and 85 are a little better, and open up to F/1.2, are excellently sharp at F/1.2 from corner to corner, and the OOF areas are just amazing, both in fore- and background.

The EF 50L F/1.2 had good OOF fore- and background as well, but it was soft in the corners until F/2.8, and was not as sharp as, e.g., the EF 135L or EF 85L. The EF 85L generally had great OOF backgrounds, but busy OOF foregrounds, and under dificult lighting conditions I found it did double up on contours in the background, which become very visible when doing some relatively extreme postprocessing. None of this all with RF 50L and RF 85L.

In addition, the EOS R gives you a very high keeper rate, basically because it uses the actual sensor for AF. It is actually amnazing to see how consistently sharp the focused areas are.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

Awesome shots, Michael. Well I pulled an about face on my all EF glass idea. I am traveling this weekend with the M6ii and the R with adapters and the 16-35 and 24-70ii. Can’t put my finger on why, but it feels clumsy. So in my usual compulsive fashion, I listed a bunch of EF glass and ordered the RF 24-70 and RF 50mm. Once all my listings sell, I’m going to get the EF-M 22mm, 32mm and 18-150mm. Going to keep my EF 85L, 70-200 2.8 and my 100-400. I can use the 85 on the M6 to get a 135. And the longer lenses are just stunning. The 70-200 maybe primarily on the FF body and the 100-400 on the crop for reach. I feel like this is a nice rounded kit and I can pick one or the other system when I travel.

Got good prices on the 2 RF lenses through CanonPriceWatch. Hoping they ship fast so they can get here while my wife is out of town.

Did my first gym shoot with the R today, using it alongside my 6DII. I haven't processed the shots yet - just checked them over - but the R literally didn't misfocus once. The face / eye AF was a joy to use on things like seated cable row shots, where most people exhibit a forward-backward motion during each repetition. In such cases with my 5D4 I'd expect to lose a few shots due to poor focus, but the R stuck to the subject's eyes like glue, and composition was so much easier without always having to adjust to get an AF point over my target.

is it just me or does the EOS R photos have a "different" look to them? Almost grainy compared to the 5d4?

My wife borderline lets me test a new lens on her. I was a little skeptical with the RF 24-105. I had a EF 24-7O II which I know will out resolve it the and especially the new RF 24-70. Had to make room for the salary cap :-). The 24-105 is just going to be a general/walk around lens. I don't really need F2.8 anymore and it is half the price. Still has CA on outsides like the original 24-105 but far less distortion and the corners aren't too bad. I hate CA. It did surprise me. 100% crop at 105mm.

Did you use flash? The image, presumably a person seems very blown out on my calibrated monitor. I don't see much in recovery worth even attempting. For what it's worth, I don't think this is a lens issue.

RAW developing, post-processing and output quality differs from person to person. Files are usually unflatteringly compressed when uploaded as well. Looking at files online is not a good means of comparison. Downloading some RAW files is your best bet if you want a good comparison.

I'm still trying to figure out that darned flash. Shot two weddings and I was never hired again. Can't figure out why.
