Alright, ya'll have gone and made me order one! Thanks for posting samples and reviews to help with the decision.

My 28-300L started giving err01 on the R. If the 24-240 works as well as the reviews and photos here suggest it may be a hard decision whether to fix the 28-300L. The extra 60 mm on the long end favor having it fixed. At least I won't be left without a good superzoom if I do get it fixed.

Received my copy today and played around with it a bit. Nothing worth posting but more about functionality. First impressions are good.

  • Obviously much lighter than the 28-300L!
  • Focus outdoors in sun/shade is fine.
  • Sharpness seems good.
  • IS is good.
  • As others have noted the Lr lens/CA profiles need some work.
  • Lr CA profile +2 (manual CA) was about right for the test shots at 24 mm. It was pretty good at 240 mm.
  • Lr lens profile removes the hard vignette and changes the distortion. The subject matter will dictate whether I use the lens profile or just crop out the vignette. Think straight lines.

There have been a few comments on the Internet about Canon using lens corrections to overcome bad lens design. Some questioned, like I did, if it was really 26 mm on the wide end.

I think the image that hits the sensor is really around 20 mm and the lens profile crops and may use part of that 20-24 mm data for distortion corrections so the final output is 24 mm equivalent. I will have to test this sometime. The bottom line is whether what I see in the EVF is actually in the final image.

Hopefully I can get out this weekend and play with it.

Seriously thinking about replacing my RF 24-105mm f4L and EF 70-300mm F4-5.6 IS II USM with this for a super zoom walk around that gives me comparable range without swapping lenses or having to use the adapter.

I still have my Tammy 24-70mm f2.8 G2 so wouldn’t miss the 24-105mm quality in that range. Given the high ISO capabilities of the R the f6.3 doesn’t worry me as much as it would have in the past.

Took the 24-240 to the music hall last night. It is definietly slower, f/stop wise, than the RF 24-105L but with the R it worked out OK. So many of my band shots are longer than 105 mm it makes sense to use the 24-240.

NOTE: I set the EXIF to RF 24-105 in order for the focal lengths to show up and be able to add it to my gallery. Adding it to the gear database has been requested.

Took it out the the lake yesterday had about 10 minutes of good diffused light. I am happier with the sharpness of the lens than with my inability to get DoF right on the first try. The sun broke through, which ended the session.

This image has the lens profile disabled in Lr.

NOTE: I set the EXIF to RF 24-105 in order for the focal lengths to show up and be able to add it to my gallery. Adding it to the gear database has been requested.

This is a chromatic aberration/lens flare test shot.

This image has the lens correction and CA profiles enabled in Lr. Manual CA is +4 on purple to handle a few spots at the top edge of the frame.

NOTE: I set the EXIF to RF 24-105 in order for the focal lengths to show up and be able to add it to my gallery. Adding it to the gear database has been requested.

Forgot to mention that I forgot to turn off IS and it did a great job at not interfering when it was on the tripod. Much better than the EF 28-300L in that regard.

Glad to see you were able to try it out. It was getting jealous of all the attention you were giving the RF 15-35! :p
