Yeah Zenon. I remember discussing this with you at length. I never really use the 400DOII with the 2x on the 7D2. It just sin't reliable enough. I have no problems with the same combo on the 5D4 though. The real problem with using big whites on anything other than a 1Dx or 1DxII is the voltage delivered by the battery. One might be able to make a case for favouring AF on the 5D4 or the R depending on their use but performance is really more similar than different with big whites. I find the combo works well on the R but I get faster acquisition on the 5D4. Af aside the challenges of using the combo for BIF are more fundamental. At least for me. Geese and herons and similar slow moving birds with predictable flight paths are fine but beyond that I'm reaching for an OVF.

I have not had that opportunity yet. I never really considered using the 2X for BIF. I will try both the 100-400 and DO bare and with a 1.4. I agree the EFV lag will be a bit of a challenge for erratic birds. Zone AF seems pretty decent but I have not pressed it yet. Even though I have the two "expensive" TC's I'm often torn between using them and cropping. I'm playing around with the 2X because I like a challenge.

Was messing around with cameras today...

Nothing really special, probably over processed the color one as I pulled the file to my phone and used Snapseed

In other news, I might end up just caving and ordering the grip. I was resisting a because I found the thing to not really coincide with the design esthetics of the camera, but I use another awkwardly designed grip on my elan 7n. But trying to handhold this camera with larger and or heavier lenses is a bit uncomfortable at times.

FD to R and M42 to R adapters arrived this morning.

Going to play with my FD 50mm F/1.4 SSC and my Helios 44M-4

Did you get one of these at Esquimalt Lagoon? Easy to shoot cause they are really slow.

What adapters did you get? I’ve been using el cheapo eBay EOS - M42 connected to the EF/RF adapter. Adapting my M42 collection was the main reason I bought the R. Long live focus peaking.

I picked up a Gutty M42- R adapter from Amazon, $17, ordered last night and at my door this morning.

Seems to work fine, has a nice rubber ring which gives a good grip for mounting and removing.


For the FD to R, I went with a Fotasy one. Will probably return it though for another Gutty - the Gutty comes in a nice plastic case instead of paper box. Better for storage.

I have a couple of M42 to EF adapters, they are VERY simple - just don’t want to double up on adapters and for the price one less part to keep track of.

I came across a Kenko 1.4x converter that I thought I'd ditched some time ago. I got it to use with my 7D as it fooled the camera, allowing it to focus at F8. It played havoc with MFA though and I hardly ever used it.

I tried it on my 7Dii and it wouldn't work at all.

Well the R's given it a new lease of life with the 100-400ii


It took some stealthy approaching but I'm pretty sure I went unseen...

I'd love to say these were captured due to the AF speed and agility but I decided the only way to get these buggers in flight is to pre-focus and hope they come to the party!

I still do not think it can be used for birds
