While I appreciate the time and effort it took to make the post about the Sony cameras, I'm not really looking to switch systems at this time.

I guess I should really look into switching to Medium Format. (just kidding)

I already have three Canon "L" lenses and the 50mm1.4. I noticed that the images you posted for the lighter weight the Sony system didn't have the same lenses mounted as the Canons. They didn't even have Sony lenses. Apples to Oranges.

if you want Canon only stuff, there's a forum for that, you'll get a lot more feedback: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=9

Considering 80% of the threads in this forum over the past 6+ months are discussing Canon cameras vs other Canon cameras (with 5% being lenses?), this seems perfectly fine to be here.

One could ask in the Landscape Talk forum too for other perspectives though as well?

So Canon users either upgrade 4 times more often than All the rest combined, are more unsure about themselfes and their cameras or Canons non top models suck?
The logic solution to this is to recommend a non Canon camera :-P

That might fix the upgrade itch!

Sony owners never swap back to Canon.... lol :D

Canon has caught up to some of the other brands when it comes to DR and ISO range. For example, you can see that the 5D4 has as good DR as the D850 up to its base ISO of 100.

I think the main advantage with Nikon and Sony are higher MP with the new sensor tech. But if you're making panoramas, you can add resolution by stitching more images together. Also, when it comes to DR, you get even greater DR by merging bracketed exposure--seems like a good workflow since you mention being a tripod shooter and are leaning towards not succumbing to upgraditis:-)

Canon 5D mk IV
EF 135mm 2.0L, EF 70-200mm 2.8L IS II, EF 24-70 2.8L II, EF 50mm 1.4, EF 100mm 2.8L Macro, EF 16-35mm 4L IS, Sigma 150-600mm C, 580EX, 600EX-RT, MeFoto Globetrotter tripod, grips, Black Rapid RS-7, CAMS plate and strap system, Lowepro Flipside 500 AW, and a few other things...

I just upgraded from the 6d to the EOS R. I do love the camera.. but now I have the urge to sell all my EF lenses and get the new RF lenses.. Which are not cheap.. Almost wish I just went for the 5dIV haha.

The A7III is a significantly more capable camera than the original 6D mk I...... but honestly I think it would be a waste of money for you. If your current camera isn't holding you back... then you are doing just fine. Take that money and go on another adventure. Have you been to Iceland or Costa Rica yet?

For Landscape photography the a7r2 or 3 would be a great upgrade with the higher dynamic range and megapixels. You could still use your canon glass for this as well. I think those two factors would be my biggest reason to upgrade ... more mp and better dr, everything else is just extra. Canon or sony can both get the job done

Thanks for the kind response. I really don't plan on "going anywhere" with my photography. I don't print anything. Its all basically travel photography for my wife and I to generate photobooks of our trips. I do like to make composites, but again, that is primarily for my own viewing.

Really what youve got is more than good enough, smaller sensors can do that well too.

The 5D Mark IV is an excellent camera, so if you are unhappy with your results now, you can definitely upgrade. However, if you want a true upgrade, hold on to your 6D for a while and get the 1D X Mark III when it comes out next year.

For the original post's intended use in particular, landscape photography, since we have no idea what the sensor on the rumored 1DX MkIII will be, it seems hard to recommend it over the proven dynamic range and MP count of the 5D4. I'm also not sure that a $7K 16+ FPS monster will help in that area of photography.

In fact, I would consider it a bit of a hindrance with the size and weight difference of the body. A 5D Mark IV with L plate, 5 lenses, and the various things you need to have for landscape (filters, etc) gets pretty darn heavy in my opinion. Not saying I wouldn’t in the right circumstances but it certainly isn’t a goal to have a larger body.

Now if that body had a MF sensor...maybe.

Then there is little reason to make the shift to a higher end camera, or to an alternative technology (which is what mirrorless truly is!...it has its pros and cons, compared to dSLR)
You could make the switch merely to have some feature that is not is your current camera, which meets some NEED of yours...otherwise is it mere GAS.

You have some very nice shots from what is seen in your POTN gallery! Nice processing and pleasing to look at. It would be nice to have those prints in the 30"+ sizes. Sometimes getting new gear can motivate you to do more and that is a positive aspect to the benefits it may offer. Mainly the motivation has to come from you and if that challenges to you do more, :-). The 5D-IV has wonderful dynamic range that in post is nice to work with.

The Canon R is an alternate at the $1,800 range where the 5D-IV is still $2,350-$2,500. As we approach this shopping season, there may be some combo deals to be on the lookout for. I bought the 5D-IV with grip, spare battery and printer combo, after rebates it was a good deal. Sold the printer and grip so it made it even better for the wallet.
