Yesterday #elal retired their last #boeing747 4X-ELC (painting a 747 silhouette in the sky). Here 4X-ELD is seen over @schiphol in 2016.

They are becoming rare, especially the passenger variants.

This is the last passenger 747 that was flying for a US airline. It had landed Dec 6, 2017 and was being stripped. Picture was taken March 7, 2018.

Nothing spectacular about this photo, except the cargo plane (sorry, I don't know the aircraft designation) was carrying the remains of the Blue Angel pilot that was killed a few years ago. I just happened to be up on the roof at Ft Pickens, FL, didn't know until a lady told me the story. So while the photo isn't very good, it is very precious to me.

Wow, how sad. That's a nice tribute, to have a fellow Blue Angel F/A-18 escort. The cargo transport a/c is the Blue Angels' dedicated support plane, nicknamed Fat Albert. It's a Lockheed C-130 Hercules.

Thank you for the input. I took several photos, none of which turned out very good. I was on the roof, when I saw the aircraft approaching I heard a lady say to her son, "Take your hat off, here they come." Then she told me the rest of the story. Kinda hard to take pictures when your vision is all blurry.

Indeed. So many of us (myself included) are not and have never been directly involved with military service and so the whole notion of sacrifice for one's country can seem very abstract, even if one reads the papers, watches and listens to the news and so on. Awhile back I was driving down the I-5 in Southern California, through USMC Camp Pendleton, and came upon a hearse with a flag-draped coffin, also heading south. I surmised that this was likely a serviceman/woman who'd made the ultimate sacrifice, and it was pretty moving. Still is.
