VPN services

I tried out a few and they seem to mess up Mac Mail, even when I apply split tunnelling with those that offer it. Split tunnelling basically allows you to exclude an app from going through VPN. After a several days my mail drops out of service and I have to create new passwords and reset two accounts on 5 devices. ExpressVPN has split tunnelling fearer but still causes grief.

I have done a lot of reading and it appears it messes with protocols and I think the keychain. I don't need it at home but I'd like it for travelling and insecure networks using my laptop.

NordVPN caused the same issues. I removed it and a week later (yesterday) my laptop would lose the internet connection after about 5 minutes. I checked the network connections and Nord was there flipping back and forth between the Ethernet connection. Sneaky.

Any experience with VPN? Any suggestions?

That’s an odd problem. I use PIA and have never see that before on computers or mobile devices. The mail service and port are fully supported on all VPNs as far as I know.

Maybe there’s an issue with your protocol stack on your machine or an issue with the network which is setting off your firewall like maybe it’s detecting some form of tunneling. Have you tried on different machines?

Maybe. I don't know. I decided I didn't need it.

I do use 1.1.1.1 to route DNS queries through Cloudflare servers rather than my ISP's servers. It's easy to configure and shouldn't cause any issues.

Thanks for the link. It was basically what they told me at Apple. The forum members gave me a link which I basically already follow. I set my email to show the entire address and I'm forced to load remote content. A bunch of small things like that.

Although my primary device isn’t an Apple, I do have PIA installer on my gf’s PC with no issues.

PIA are also considering one of, if not the best VPN providers. Many claim they don’t keep logs but actually do whereas it has been proven many times that PIA don’t keep them.

You can be pretty sure that even if a particular provider makes an effort to remove log files, they will connect to another service that will log everything.
As I'm typing this from sunny New Zealand, at least 16 hops to the POTN server, each of which will have a log of my firewall's source I/P address etc.

From my perspective, the only reason to use a vendor VPN is to get around some geo-blocked web content, as any imaginary concept of security is purely that.

Your problem is very familiar to me. But honestly, I'm a bit surprised to hear that Express VPN has been reducing the speed of your internet connection. I use it nowadays, and it has never disappointed me. If talking about the Nord VPN, yes, it may decrease your internet connection. That's why I stopped using it and chose Express. Of course, I was very doubtful if it's worth doing it. But after my sister showed me this PinpointVPN article, I understood that I would hardly find a better option. The fact it works even in China speaks for itself. It's a very reliable service, I'm sure you'll be delighted.
