Hi all. I'm planning to upgrade my camera soon, I'm currently using a 7Dmk1. I'm considering both the 5Dmk4 and the 90D, but I'm having trouble deciding. The 5D has advantages such as being full frame, larger pixels, being a more solid camera, with pro-level features, but the 90-D benefits from more advanced technology. For those of you who have used these cameras, what are they like? I'd love any advice you can give me about the cameras in actual use.

OK, I'll do it ...

What will you be shooting?

:-)

Sorry. Hard to answer without this crucial piece of information.

The next question will be, what lenses do you have?

5D3, 7D2, EF 16-35 f/2.8L, EF 24-70 f/2.8L II, EF 24-105 f/4L, EF 70-200 f/2.8L II, EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L II, EF 1.4x III, Sigma 150mm macro, Lumix LX100 plus a cupboard full of bags, tripods, flashes & stuff.

I just upgraded from the 7D to the 5Dmk4, so I can speak to that. I have not tried the 90D so I can't speak to that.

The 5Dmk4 is a significant upgrade. The autofocus is so much better that I still am not sure I believe it. Focusing in low light is now possible and high ISO performance is also a major difference.

I was waiting for the 7Dmk3 but it doesn't look like it is coming and the 90D just didn't appear to be a camera that would work for me. In fact, if I had not bought the 5Dmk4, I would have bought the 7Dmk2.

I shoot mostly grandkids and birds.

Tim

Not sure how the 90D would be considered "advanced technology" over the 5D4. The 5D4 is professional level, more advanced AF, video, and FF sensor that has 1 stop more DR than the 90D. Seems to me they're still different tiers: the 90D being great for its price category (that does have clear advantages over the Rebel series). If money isn't an issue, though, can't see how one would compare it with the 5D4. Besides IQ and AF of the 5D4, another feature I like compared to the XXD/6D series is the customization of all buttons. Could be that I started off with a 5D, but to me, I can tailor the 5D4 to have everything at my fingertips...while I've found post 50D/6D cameras have functions buried in menus that I need to fumble through.

Wow, never quite saw a thread like this. Comparisons are usually concerned with cameras much closer in value and features. This is like being unable to choose between a Lexus IS300 and an LS500 - Really quite different animals.

I'll add one of those crucial questions, too...

What is it you cannot do with your 7D that you want to do with your next camera?

I shoot with a range of cameras. The ones I use on a regular basis are the Canon Powershot G16 and the 5DMkIV. While I haven't used a 90D, the 2nd generation predecessor to the 5D was a 60D.

What do you want to do?

I recently did a street shoot in DC with the G16. At five and a half years old, it remains a finely awesome camera. With preset focal lengths, I shot at 35mm equivalent focal length the entire time. Add to that its predecessor, the G9, took photos that made it to both covers of a book on aviation safety along with the rest on pages inside the book. Both the G9 and G16 are "compact" cameras, high end point and shoots. I'm good with that. Here's an album with photos from the aforementioned G16. Note that these were all shot as Jpegs.

https://grahamglover.zenfolio.com/p565806569 (external link)

The funny thing with the G16 is that I was looking at the Fujifilm line. I was considering that for street photography. When I looked further into what I had, specifically with the G16, I realized it really could do what I needed. Maybe someday I'll go the Fuji route, but not now.

I looked at your work on your website. I don't see a compelling reason for the 5DMkIV. Do you need the 5DMkIV? Would the 90D suffice? If you're going to be changing cameras, I'm curious as to why you aren't considering the 7DMkII. I'd see the 90D as a step back, the 5DMkIV as a big step forward. I'd also see the 7DMkII as a logical progression, assuming your current 7D is really getting old.

Ultimately it's up to you. Spend what you want. Spend more? There's less money for travel. Spend less? You might risk a compromise on what you can create.

Hope this helps!

Go for the 5D Mark IV. It is the best camera I have handled till now!
The 90D is also great, but it is more enthusiast-level than professional-level.

I prefer shooting portraits, but I also want a camera that is good in a variety of situations. Landscapes, street photography, cityscapes, etc.

But it is 3 years old, whereas the 90D is brand spanking new. Newer processor, etc.

Also, I want to make it clear that I'm not asking which is the better camera, I'm trying to find out which is the better camera for me.

The 5D4 is older, but still implemented premium tech. The 5D4 is very responsive in its class for AF, video, and customization. Plus it's FF sensor has higher performance. Those are the stats for 5D4: I don't think you have stated what your requirements are, so it's impossible to say what's best for you. When it comes to the original question of whether 90D or 5D4 is best: well money be damned, 5D4 is still higher tier.

Actually, if you're on the fence between a 5D4 and 90D, why are you even asking?

As mentioned, the 5D4 is a truly professional-grade camera, designed and built to be such.
It does not disappoint, and I'm still just trying to learn about what it's capable of.

Yes, it's been teased that there may be a MkV, but what the MkIV can do already
is absolutely phenomenal.

I have no experience with the 90D, but the 5D4 is all it's cracked up to be, and then some.
Image quality alone has been more than I'd hoped for, and I've gotten more leeway in
post-processing than was ever available from RAW files of my previous cameras.

My first use of it captured some images at 12800 ISO which are true keepers.
Set to Auto-ISO, I wasn't aware of the setting, but I'd have never attempted anything
over 3200 with my 50D or earlier cameras, knowing they could not have delivered.

Given the choice and budget allowance, I find no reason NOT to grab a 5D MkIV.

Even the 7d2 is better than the 90d in some regards, so yes the 5d4 is better. The 90d only has resolution/pixel density and a tilt LCD over the 5d, and nothing else really that matters.

... but the 90-D benefits from more advanced technology. ....

What features specifically on the 90D are calling out to you? Which do you think are more advanced?

Sensor: The 5D4 has the better sensor. The only advantage the 90D's sensor has over the 5D4 is pixel density. The 5D4 has better noise handling and better dynamic range.

AF: The 5D4 has better "SLR" auto focus. The 90D may very well have better "live view" AF, but I've not seen a side by side.

There is a reason the 5D4 is still 2x times the cost,. it's a very capable camera.

The types of shooting you mention, would lead me to believe that a good full frame might in fact be more in line with your subject matter.

5D4, no question.

Perhaps consider the EOS R? Saves you some money, and you get the latest tech w/ pretty much the same sensor as the 5D4.
