When did you realize you wanted to ditch your zoom lenses for primes?

When I started taking photography a bit more seriously, zooms were rare, expensive and not too good. So I started out with four primes, in the range 35 to 300 mm. Eventually, as zooms became more common, I added the FDn 70-210 mm f/4 as my sports photography zoom.

Once I went digital (2006), I started adding more zooms. I now have them covering the range of 8 to 400 mm. But I've also added a number of primes, from 24 to 300 mm.

I covered an orienteering competition a while ago. Looking back, I found that I used three zooms, the EF 11-24 mm f/4L USM, EF 24-105 mm f/4L IS II USM and the EF 70-200 mm f/2.8L IS II USM. But I also used three primes, the EF 28 mm f/2.8 IS USM, EF 135 mm f/2L USM and EF 300 mm f/2.8L IS II USM.
So an even distribution, three of each.

I don't want to ditch my zooms as i travel a lot but i'd like to have some Canon L primes also when i go for landscape photography tours. It is all about your budget and desire to take shots with this hobby.

I was a man who hates walking but after i bought my first camera i lose weight bcos of walking :) Istanbul is a lovely city for photo taking. So you need a zoom walk-around lens always.

I am keeping my zooms. Although my Sigma 18-300 is soft all the way around, it meets my needs a walk-around zoom. After post-processing its images look fine on my 2560x1440 monitor when viewed with my 74-year-old eyes. And it is much easier on my back than the two zooms I had previously: 70-300 and 15-85. Nevertheless I still value my three prime lenses: 8mm Sigma, 60mm EFs Canon macro, and (probably) my new Sigma 30mm/1.4. The 30mm hasn't arrived yet; it is still roaming around the town on a FedEx truck.

I also have a Canon 10-22 but don't use it much as my Sigma fisheye does a great job, even after "de-fishing" it with software.

Edit: I now have the Sigma 30/1.4. Looks good so far. So my primes outnumber my zooms, 3-1, but I am still keeping my zooms

Canon 80D, 60D, Canon 10-22EFs, 15-85EFS IS, Sigma 100-400, Sigma 135/1.8ART, Sigma 30mm f/1.4DC, Canon 60mm EFs Macro, Rokinon 8mm fisheye, 550EX flash, Olympus TG6 underwater P&S
Postprocessing: DxOLabs 5, DxO Viewpoint 3, Paint Shop Pro 2021
Speak softly and carry a big zoom.

I knew right away. My setup:

24mm f2.8 IS
50mm f1.4
100mm f2
200mm f2.8
2x teleconverter which gives:
400mm f5.6
