Planning to visit Maiami during Christmas time with 6D Mark 2. I have 17-40mm, 24-70mm f/4 and 70-300mm IS USM 1 zomm lens.
I also have 50mm STM and 100mm f/2 prime lens.
I would like to carry 2 lens. I can use 70-300mm during Everglades visit. I am planning to stay in Miami downtown. 17-40mm might come handy. Is it good ideal to swap 17-40mm with 24-105mm lens. Any suggestions?

I'd say it depends entirely what you plan on shooting. Beach and ocean landscapes? Cityscapes? Downtown street photography? People? Food? For most things, 24-xx (you said 24-70 in one place and 24-105 in another) will be more versatile than the 17-40. I'd always rather have more options than feel like I missed a photo op due to poor packing, so I'd just bring both...

IME skip the 100 f/2. Great portrait lens, but when you're traveling you'll want more background even if you are taking nice portraits, to remember the cool place you were in. 50 STM... I could take or leave, I usually prefer zooms when traveling for the versatility, and rarely regret it, but that's also down to personal preference.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the information. I am thinking about carrying all there zoom lens (17-40mm, 24-70mm and 70-300mm). I have 24-70mm. Just wondering if it is a good ideal to sell 24-70mm and get 24-105mm instead.

Thanks

Heya,

I live in Florida.

Miami is crowded, buildings everywhere and even when you get the coast, it's congested and crowded. I would use the 17-40 for that. You will rarely need a long lens in the cities unless you just want to take pictures of people's faces.

Take your best long zoom for the Everglades, there will be lots of birds (egrets, heron) and sunning reptiles (turtles, etc).

So I would take the 17-40 and the 70-300.

Very best,

Thanks for the information. Going to carry 17-40mm (downtown) and 70-300mm (Everglades) lens for the trip. If possible, i will take 24-70mm f/4 lens. I have 70-300mm usm is 1st version with zoom creep when lens is facing down. is it good idea to get either version 2 or L version. Also thinking about RP to save some weight. But i need to buy extra batteries and some RP lens to take advantage of weight and size.

Take the 50 1.8 for the inbetween focal length between 40 and 70. It is a small lens. Plus it gives you a fast lens for any time f4 doesn't work.

Thanks for the information TeamSpeed. I can tuck in 50mm in Camera bag. I should be able to manage 17-40, 70-300 and 50mm lens without 24-70 mm general purpose zoom right?

For me wide lenses in cities are overrated. I like a little reach, but more importantly a fast lens. The city becomes visually interesting during mornings evenings and nights - and there a fast and stabilized lens helps (if you don't want to lug around a tripod).

Depends if you stay on the street the entire time, or you get up in the air. Also, if you visit Miami, you don't just stay in downtown proper, you go to the beach.

If you are flying to Miami, you might want to seriously look at the size of your final kit, unless you don’t care about the last minute possibility of having to check a bag.

My wife and I took a week long anniversary trip to Hawaii, and I brought my 1D4 and a few lenses, along with other electronics, and everything else needed, and we checked zero bags, everything fit on our carryons. Now they had to pack two of the carryons into the belly of the plane at the doors, but that was fine, the electronics bag went with me into the plane.

Put incidentals/clothing/toiletries in one carryon, put all electronics in another. Thinktank has an excellent backback bag that holds alot of gear, including a notebook. The gear mentioned won't take up a lot of room.

What he said! Tuck in the 50 as well!

The 24-xx is not wide enough for cityscapes. No 24 can shoot this without stitching (crop equivalent of 13 mm FF):

If birding interests you at all, a morning up at Wakodahatchee Wetlands near Delray would be well worth it.....some of the best I have encountered anywhere. Your 70-300mm would be perfect.

I am planning to take 17-40mm, 70-300 IS USM and 50mm. That is already too much weight with 6D mark 2. With 2 iphones, we have lot of photo gear to cover simple family vacation. I do not want to carry another brick (24-70mm). I might miss IS on 24-70mm. But 6D mark 2 has electronic stabilization for videos. Does iphone (XR/X) gives better video in 4k compared 6D mark 2 1080p?
