I don't know about the 90D,,,but I always find for birds in flight 1/1000 of a sec, even for big birds and f/9 gives me better results with the 100-400 + 1.4 ext.

When using this combo I always find f/9 gives better results,,then you lose some auto focus options. I also always try to shoot faster shutter speeds when hand holding ,,which most of mine are. Overall happy with 6d ii,,,but if main interest is for birds,,the 7dii works great too.

Travelling to Miami for 6 days. Visiting Everglades, Key west , beach and other downtown attractions. I have 17-40mm f/4,
24-70mm f/4 and 70-300 is usm zoom lens. I have 50mm stm and 100mm f/2 lens. Which lens to take. I should have bought 24-105mm lens instead of 24-70mm one for more reach. I would like to take 2 zoom lens in 2 bags. I can stuff in 50mm stm lens.

Your bird won't be any worse for the 4.15x higher pixel density of a 32.5MP 1.6x crop camera, but if you expect more usable magnification of the bird itself, you're going to have to increase the shutter speed to try to maintain "keeper" percentages at increased levels of magnification. The 1/fl rule and the variations of it for certain shooting situations are intended for non-demanding viewing situations, and don't take high magnification into account, and assume that limit is detailed by low pixel density, anyway. Also, choosing shutter speed for the angle of view or the angle of the pixel does not account for subject motion, which is somewhat independent of those concerns (wings flapping and bodies bobbing vertically while you pan horizontally).

The DOF difference between f/8 and f/9 is not huge, but there can be a larger difference in lens aberrations that are reduced at f/9.

Being Winter here in New York, it was a nice morning for shooting Blue Jays.
Shot these in AV mode and my Canon 100mm 2.8 macro. Love this lens

I've finally joined the FF crowed. I picked up a 6Dm2 for my birthday. I've been prowling the streets with it for just over a month now. I'm still getting used to the wider FoV and all the 'stuff' that it has.

Found a sweet looking 1964 Eldorado. One of my favorite eras in automotive history.
