Going from EOS 6D to EOS R or RP?

I'm starting to think about upgrading my 6D. There isn't any urgency and this might not happen for 12 months or so, if at all.

I've had my 6D for almost 6 years and I'm really, really happy with it. The only thing that's started this thought process is the fact that recently I've been shooting subjects on the ground which has involved lying face down in the mud. I'm over 60 now and getting back up isn't getting easier ;-)a Although I don't like shooting with Live View, I now accept that it can be useful and that an articulated screen would be nice and might mean less lying on the ground. I'm not a Pro so a single SD card slot is fine with me.

So a little about my needs. I never ever use video. My camera is for stills photography only. I've never shot sports so 5 fps is fine for me. I do quite often shoot high ISO in low light. The 6D is amazing for this and I don't know if things have improved here with the R and RP but I certainly wouldn't want anything less than what the 6D does. Although the limited number of autofocus points didn't bother me initially with the 6D, the fact that they are all clustered in the centre is an issue. When you are trying to use focus stacking in landscape shots, a wider spread of af points would be good. Finally, I've read that the R and RP work seamlessly with Canon lenses using the adaptor but I've recently bought a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art which I love and it would be essential that this lens also works seamlessly with the R or RP. Although the new R mount lenses seem really nice, I don't anticipate me being able to afford to buy any for quite a few years although having a sharper 24-105L would be great.

The RP is about 35% cheaper than the R where I live. Would the cheaper RP meet my needs? I know the RP has the 6D mk2 sensor. I've heard some people say they prefer the 6D image quality over the 6D2 so that makes me worry about getting the RP. How does the eye AF compare between the R and RP?

Opinions welcome....thanks.

I've got an RP, mainly for reasons of portability. I'm on the wrong side of 60 too, with recently replaced knees, and much as I love the 1D and 5D they are lumps to carry about, particularly the 1D.

I can only say that using the same lenses the image quality on the RP is practically indistinguishable from my 5D mk4.

I'm not a huge fan of electronic viewfinders, you often seem to be staring at your previous photo when you want to be getting on with the next one.

With Canon lenses the adaptor works perfectly, i've no experience using it with Sigma lenses but I haven't read of anybody complaining about incompatibility.

A couple of low light photos (of no particular photographic merit!) taken, of course, in a pub:

I love my R and the latest firmware transformed the camera IMO. Still not good for action but excellent picture quality and ergonomics.

If you can swing the R for $500.00 more, it's definitely going to be an upgrade from the 6D.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately in my part of the world (UK), the price difference between the the two bodies is not $500, its actually over $1000 with the R costing the equivalent of US$2800 and the RP coming in at $1730.

The other thing I prefer about the R is the max shutter speed of 1/8000. On my 6D I struggle with my Sigma 35mm 1.4 wide open on a bright day with its 1/4000 maximum. I believe the RP is the same.

Actually, I've just had a look on the B&H website and although I appreciate there are sales taxes which vary from state to sate, it looks like the EOS R is almost half the price it costs here in Europe :-(

I think the R has a few things going for it over the RP. Better sensor, longer battery life, that door thing that closes over the sensor when the camera is turned off (less likely to get dust in there when changing lenses), and I think the LCD screen has better resolution. Also a slightly larger body so the fit in the hand is likely to be a little better.

Thanks. I've pretty much decided that I will go for the EOS R when I do upgrade. It may be the last "serious camera" that I buy so I do want it to be decent. When I do get one, it will most probably be a grey import because that comes in at 1300 uk pounds compared to 2100 uk pounds from an official Canon source here in the UK. I've also decided to keep the EOS 6D because it is worth more to me as a second body than the small sum I would get from selling it.

For some of us, who are using Linux, upgrading to EOS R/RP/M50 and beyond is impossible.

Canon chose to keep the .CR3 format secret and proprietary. Adobe has the wherewithal/power to get the format spec and update its suite of programs. Linux distros can't and it seems that reverse engineering CR3 is not successful to-date.

If Canon doesn't want my money, in the sorry state its sales are in, Canon will not get my money.:-D
