Managed to snag a couple crescent moon photos this evening. I got to say, it was nice shooting with this camera, I did notice the buttons are not quite where I am used to from the R or mkII, but for the most part, with the help of a light bulb I was able to find my way around.

Once again, I loaded up images with RawTherapee and found same decently sharp images. I tried a couple photos with the 1.4x extender but really didn't like those either with the 300mm f/4L IS or the sigma 150-600, so I ignored them. After all, this was more so just testing the camera out.

I did notice on almost all images, I had major purplish fringing especially in the horn area of the crescent. White balance issue? RT issue? 5dmkII issue? Lens issue? Not sure, I ended up doing a monochrome conversion to rid the purple cast. Trying to pull the image up in dark table to see if purple cast is there too.

And just looked in darktable, don't seem the purple cast is there. I wonder what is going on, native cr2 files for both. Actually, looking around a bit, the images seem to look a bit better in dark table...

Sigh... I don't know, one moment things seem to work good on this set up, the next...

Sorry, forgot to quote the case...

Hi,
I have the same top dial fail functioning in my unit.
Did you get this already repaired?
What was the reason for the failure?
What was needed, cleaning or replacing the wheel?

I haven't done anything yet. I had my 1D4 out getting fixed up by a local guy last week, I am thinking of bringing in the 5D4 and 7D2 for "deep cleaning and tune up" which I've never done before, but the 1D4 apparently really needed it. I'll ask him about it then and see if it's a task he'll take on.

Well, like wxjef, I too upgraded to the 5DIV this Christmas season, but I'm coming from the original 7D. I was holding out hope for the 7dIII, but it doesn't look like that will ever be produced. I thought about the R, but the shutter speed and battery life are potential issues (I shoot mostly birds). I also thought about the Nikon D850 and the Sony A3R, but I didn't want to have to buy all new lenses. As it was, I had to get a normal zoom for the 5DIV (I bought the Tamron 27-70 f/2.8 G2), but I am able to use my Sigma 150-600C. Changing brands would have required me to change that lens as well.

Anyway, I have always admired the 5DIV, so, with my wife's approval, I took the plunge and bought a 5DIV. So far, shooting mostly grandsons and birds, I'm extremely happy with the focusing speed and accuracy, the ISO performance and the incredible picture quality. The fps is not quite the same as the 7D, but it hasn't been a problem so far.

I had a couple of chances to go birding this week between Christmas and New Year, and here are a couple of shots.

So... Like a few folk 'round here, I took advantage of the massive deals of late. After not shooting Canon for ten years, my old 1D Mark IIn has been replaced by a 5D Mark IV. Picked up the camera, grip and 64GB SD card as a B&H package and popped for the C-Log update. The grip and card were essentially free (same price as body only). All-in, it was priced better than Black Friday and really, similar to used prices. Go me! I could've saved a bit going with a Canon refurb body, but I wanted new (along with the grip and card).

It's a bit odd as I never cared for, nor owned any of the 5D bodies. I was waiting for a modernized 1Ds I suppose; the 1D X series didn't scratch that itch with only 20MP in the Mark II. While the 5Ds/r were tempting at 50MP, they were overkill and old news. The 5D4 seemed like a good solution; full frame at 30MP with the latest (albeit 2016) feature set.

I switched to Leica rangefinders in 2008, followed by the Fujifilm X-T1 (and later X-T2) in 2014 or so. While the latter is still my preferred platform of choice these days (and I have no intention of changing that) I missed shooting all my L lenses. With the 1D Mark IIn, it didn't make much sense with its whopping 8.2MP. Still a great camera, but... Happy to say that my L glass was just as I left it. A quick cleaning and we're off to the races!

One of my lenses has been discontinued and six have been updated. But I've no plans to upgrade.

So much has changed in ten years... Yet so much has remained the same... We'll see how it goes!

I have always owned the 1Series FF bodies and decided a year ago to replace them with a couple 5DVI’s. I loved the 1Dx and never wanted more resolution but the weight of two bodies in the backpack got old. Enjoy the new camera.

Thanks! I've been having a blast playing with it so far.

Yeah, the 1D series is pretty massive (especially coming from Leica and Fuji after a long absence). It's nice to be able to ditch the grip for a smaller package with the 5D4 (something I've become very accustomed to with Fuji). My previous experience with the Canon D30 (ikr?) left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth because of the flex between the grip and body... Which is totally not an issue with the 5D4's more body-conforming grip design.
