Gannets spend a lot of time collecting and weaving nesting material, and they use stones, grass, tussock and seaweed to construct nests to withstand the buffeting west coast wind at Muriwai Auckland, NZ

This fellow was having difficulty navigating as the seaweed kept flapping in his eyes. His landing was more of a controlled crash.

Great shot! Did it fly really close? your focal length used was surprisingly short.

I have to say for anyone in the Bay Area or Northern California in general, this has been a great year for eagles at the Sacramento/Colusa NWR complex. I even caught a golden yesterday, along with about 7 balds. It used to be a treat to see just one in a year! They should be hanging out through January, so I would highly recommend a trip up there if you haven't been before.

Hi and thanks for your comment. Yep it flew within about 10m of me, and I did some cropping.

Is that the modern equivalent of the carrier pigeon? :p

serious: it may be a pigeon but also a cuckoo, looking at the stripes at the underside of the tail, but unable to tell for certain with this picture

Tail not long enough or the correct shape for a Cuckoo.
