I would like to see more of that plane. It says LS3 powered. A Chevy V-8? Is it a Piper PA-36? I used to work on them. Installed spray systems and even used the chemical tank for fuel on a long ferry flight.

It is a Chev LS3 conversion into a Pawnee. As a glider pilot it was an amazing tow, it has so much performance off the runway. Huge cost advantage come replacement/rebuild and much more economical to operate. The nose profile & the radiators are the only visual difference but the noise is amazing, best sounding tug I've ever been behind!

Thanks for the info. I used to work at the Lycoming plant that built the original 0-540. They have nearly priced themselves out of business. And, I used to joke that the only guy that never got laid off from Piper was the one who raised prices.

and you are paying very high prices for old tech, the LS3 conversion seems to make a lot of sense from a cost pov but there are still a few bugs to sort. Considering some of the ADs on the pawnee now it could revitalise the fleet into the future.

First photo of me in my own glider, I'm usually to focused on what I'm doing to worry about getting someone to take a photo of me. This was a very casual morning and the club manager was about to launch me when he started taking photos as he hadn't seen a Cobra in decades.

Do they have that "new plane" smell, Dom ? I'll bet they do !



When I used to work at McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach many, many moons ago as a young engineer (fresh out of college), I'd walk the flight-line at lunchtime where they were prepping the new airliners for delivery. That was fun. I remember that the air-stairs were grounded, and everybody going in was supposed to touch a panel at the bottom of the stairs so that they wouldn't load the plane up with static electricity, which apparently can have a cumulative effect on the avionics.
