Travis that doesn't look that low for laying your your belly  (kidding of course) At the current time I don't think I could get low enough to get that angle.

I am pretty fat...so it makes me a little higher! The tripod was laid out flat, and there is the ball head...so the camera is not right on the ground...but it wasn't far from that rock.

I just happen to have the BTS image from my phone...

Any tips for Death Valley? It's on my list in the near future, gotta get some more parks checked off before I need to renew my park pass.

I don't do it that often...but this one I really wanted to get down low to show those textures off. They are much smaller than I was expecting.

Don't go in the summer...go in the winter when it isn't hot, the skies are better. There are a lot of places to see, great places to shoot, many of them are pretty easy to get to...Zabriskie, Badwater, Mesquite Flats...all pretty easy access.

You can't see it all in 2 days and it can get cold at this time of year. Lots of driving and walking. There is also wildlife. I haven't been to the playa where the boulders move but I thought I read that you can't get there without an off road vehicle or you can hire a guide. Not too sure on that one. Also, the first time I went I exited where I didn't enter the park. I think I went out at the south end. What a mistake. Miles and miles out in the middle of nowhere. I think it took about two hours to get back to Vegas. You will definitely enjoy this trip.

Having been to the Racetrack Playa, yes a capable 4X4 jeep is recommended...

I spent 4 days last year and another 4 next month...lots to see.

I've been there multiple times. Go in Winter for the best weather. Thanksgiving and Christmas are the busiest times of the year. Pack a lunch because DV is huge (over 100 miles north to south) and there's only a handful of places to get food.

If you go to the racetrack, rent a jeep. http://farabeejeeps.com/ (external link)

I've done it a couple of times and if you're a good driver, you can make the trip from Furnace Creek to the Racetrack in two hours. Doing it in car is asking for trouble.

If you're staying on pavement, I can send a list of sights that will take you at least a whole day with minimal driving.

Was there over Christmas. Pics at https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=18989325

Badwater for sure, I think morning shots are good. Also Mesquite Dunes, either morning or evening, you need those shadows. Zabriskie Point another obvious one to hit. I never went to the Racetrack, I think that's a long drive up a dirt road. If I was to go back I'd pick March or April, winter is actually a little cool there.

2 hours...dang...we spent longer than that on the dirt road after Ubehebe...I was driving and didn't want to tear up the Jeep or the occupants...as it was we felt like we had been in a paint shaker for a couple hours...when we go back next month, I am going to leave earlier and spend more time checking stuff out on the way...break it into shorter stints in the shaker.

We are going to do Mesquite in the morning this time, hoping for longer shadows for a bit longer...last year the sun went down behind the mountains too fast and we didn't get much of the long shadows...January was a great time to be there, February is too from what I have seen and watched after we got back last year. I am really hoping for a little rain to fill the polygons in Badwater...with water.

If you drive fast enough over the washboard sections, the jeep starts to float over it. ;)

For any first timers to DV:

A good book that gives you all the best places: https://www.amazon.com …l-Exploring/dp/0762728078 (external link)

For a pavement-only trip that will take you to the best places in one day, I suggest this order:
Dante's View
Zabriskie Point
Stovepipe Wells/Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes
Artist's Palette
Badwater Basin

Eureka Dunes and the Racetrack are each all-day trips from Furnace Creek (which is where the Jeep rental is).
