Milan Duomo! I have taken the almost exact same shot. It's a photog's dream, eh? I loved it. I love Italy, come to that, especially the northern half.

The bell tower was built seperately because the ground is not very stable, too soft. They were frightened that the vibrations from the clanging would damage the church

Woah! Now those are pretty special flying buttresses. I wonder if they were added later, as many were?

It looks prettier than when I last saw it. There is also some war-time history there! Can you still walk/climb up the outside of the dome, it is a bit steep?

I vaguely remember visiting Mosta Dome when I was out there in 1954. My father was in the R.A.F. stationed at Luqa. We were shown the bomb that went through the roof of the dome and didn't explode. Just as well as the dome was full of abut 5000 people. It was deemed a miracle and the bomb was emptied of all the nasty bang stuff, a slot cut in it and then placed in the main church so people could donate to the hard up catholic church?

Just recently I have read a book called UXB Malta, a superb read written by the boss of one of the only bomb disposal teams there during the war. They hed removed the bomb, made it safe and chucked it over a cliff into the sea. The bomb with the money slot is the replacement.

The bomb

P.S. Quite a few bombs didn't explode but they weren't declaired to be miricals. Funny that iniot

I have just noticed the date on your post Ray. I was there until 1956. I wonder if our paths crossed?

Hi Jon, possible. It was a bit hectic in 56 due to the Suez crisis. I certainly remember that. I was responsible (with others) for maintenance of radio stations and ensuring Her Majesty’s radio transmissions propagated around the Empire via the ionosphere. No satellites those days and semiconductors/transistors were still being developed under close wraps. Film cameras only were available with fine grain films being the normal choice because of the strong sun. I will not go into the social life.:-)

Not too much social life at sub 12 me-thinks :-P:-P But that's where I learned to swim and really enjoyed our 2 1/2 years there.

No more hi-jack though. Kalkara church showing above all else.

Sorry Jon - I didn't mean to hi-jack. I had quite a few of these particular pics ready to upload and it seemed a good time to post them.
I was on the Southern tip near Marsaskala.

No appology needed Ray. It's nice to find someone else wot was there.

On our second holiday there I took some photo/post cards with us that I have from the 1950s they are of Tarxien Temples and the Hypogeium. Whe we lived in Paula for 6 months I used to play in both of those places. Now you have to book at least a year ahead to get into the Hypogeium!

The Hypogaium is an underground complex. Audible perfect and nobody has any idea how old it is or why it was excavated. BUT, we had fun with out damaging it it would seem! :-)

Our last rip over I took a CD to the Malta Heritage in the old Beghi Hospital complex and gave it to them. They had never seen the photos before and asked if they could have the originals? Well, I had to admire the sense of humour?

Maybe sometime???

Thanks Jon. It was years before I returned and I found all the locals that I spoke to were eager to talk, but even then digital photography was only a pipe-dream in someone’s laboratory.:-)
I haven’t scanned many of my Colour slides from those days yet. I have a couple of B/W shots of the Turkish cemetery at Marsa I might post.
I had a few shots I couldn’t identify so I attached them to an email and. sent them to one of the govt sites on the island for identification and they responded immediately.
It really is surprising how well some of the negs have kept and how well they scan.
But I usually look at my work critically and decline to post it. Competition/quality seems to be getting higher by the day-?
Just wondering what the new offerings Canon will temp us with? :-)
