Jeff, don't buy the camera because you think you need it to make better pictures, buy the camera because you want to and you like it. That's all the reason and reasoning you need. We could all drive $500 cars if we wanted to but we don't want to.

I have tried the 9 point and the single point as well as the "full field". I think I just need more practice

I believe the 9 point AF system only had the center point as cross type. OK for still shots but for moving subjects its not the best.

I know I said in previous page I was going to get mk3. Through some kind of messed up reasoning. But after further thinking I changed my mind. I'm going to look for a used mk2 instead. Reason being, I can geta clean body and relatively low shutter count. Which is irrelevant really. I know I'll be replacing the shutter at some point anyway. But as of right now you can easily find clean mk2 bodies for anywhere between 3700-4200. Once the mk3 comes out the used market will be flooded with mk2 shortly thereafter. Driving that price down even lower!

What helped me decide on used mk2 over new mk3 is as follows:

Say I get one for 4 grand. That's easily 2k less than new mk3. That would buy some damn nice glass! Which will do far more for me than the meager improvements the mk3 has over the mk2. Like the OP I'm not a professional. I want the mk3, I don't feel I need it. I do feel I need the mk2 however. Coming from an 80D would be a whole new world of shooting!

$4,000 sounds way high for a 1DX Mark 2. . Why do you think they are so much more expensive than they really are?

Even at 150K, this one's shutter probably has a good deal of life left on it, and it's from a very well known, trustworthy seller:

"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I was going off a rough median from what little offerings I've noticed. I'm more concerned the condition of the body. I dont want one that looks like it was run over by a truck while bouncing down the road.

This one looks good though! Still got some saving tondo either way!

I just got a very nice 1dxii with 125k clicks on eBay for $2800. They can be had now for under $3k if you are patient and wait for the right auction

I've still got some saving to do. So I'm forced to be patient. I expect the price to drop even further once the mk3 is released!

I expect that to be right. . I think that used 1DX2 bodies will drop to the $2200 - $2400 range within the next 18 months, but then not drop very quickly after that. . I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if you still have to pay $1600 to $1800 for one in 2024.

Used camera depreciation has been very inconsistent over the past 10 or 12 years. . It used to be that a body would drop to less than half price within 2 years after release, then drop to just 20% to 25% of its original value within 4 years.

Cases in point:

The 1D2 was released at $5,000. . I bought a used one two years later for $2200.

The 5D was released at $3,300. . I bought a brand new one two and a half years later for $1800.

The 50D was released at $1400. . I bought a used one just 17 months later for $450.

Nowadays, the prices on most bodies don't drop nearly as quickly, and I don't understand why. . This really hurts people such as myself who can't even begin to afford new gear, and have to wait for the bottom to drop out of used prices before we can upgrade. . With my extremely limited budget, I used to use bodies that were just two or three years behind the latest & greatest ..... lately, I've been stuck using bodies that are 7 to 9 years behind.

I have thought about this a lot, but cannot isolate one single factor which is responsible for the change in depreciation rates. . It is still much wiser and more responsible to buy used, but not to the same extent that it was a decade ago.

.

Looking at just Canon 1 Series, I think that until the 1D4, each update was more significant than following updates, particularly for users who don't use Video.
Megapixels alone, for the higher frame rate bodies, 1D2 8MP, 1D3 10MP, 1D4 16MP (first single model without an 'S' equivalent), 1DX 18MP, 1DXII 20MP, 1DX 3 20MP.
High ISO performance improved with each update, I don't know if the improvement was linear but 1D4 had ISO1600 performance that, while subjective, was acceptable to most users. My estimate would be 1D4 ISO1600 was better than 1D2 ISO800, 2 stops improvement over 2 updates while 1DX2 ISO3200 similar to 1D4 1SO1600, 1 stop improvement over 2 updates.
I believe 60D could be considered the xxD equivalent of 1D4, the body in that line where less improvements occurred in subsequent models.

The EOS R has had large discounts in short time. I only follow Australian pricing but it was $3300 at release, I bought one about 12 months later for $2600, a few months later it could be bought for $2400 and recently was available for $2250. These are sale prices, EOFY, Black Friday and Boxing Day, but these sales discounts were much larger than other Canon DSLRs.
