What is the point of a fancy smartphone with no internet, even via WiFi?

...no internet, no wi-fi, no apps that can be downloaded from the app store = 'dumbphone', not 'smartphone', it seems

Yes, there may be preloaded apps, but so often they typically need to be set up on the user before they become useful

And be sure USB transfer is enabled on his phone...

.
I just went through everything in the "SETTINGS" area of my android phone, and nowhere did I find anything about enabling or disabling USB transfer.

Sometimes, when a suggestion is made, it takes some of us A LOT of time and effort and research to be able to do what was suggested. . Just finding the setting that we are encouraged to adjust can take HOURS.

I have Googled this thing about the USB transfer enablement on my phone, and searched YouTube for instructional videos about it, and come up with ZERO. . Everything that I see looks completely different than it does on my phone.

People must not assume that because something is simple and easy on their device, that it is probably simple and easy on someone else's device. . This is why these threads often go on for pages and pages - it is not the same questions with the same answers. . Rather, it is someone trying to do what was suggested and finding that it doesn't work for them "as is", and that additional things will have to be performed just to get to the point where one can do what was suggested. . Things are so effing complicated, and I think that sucks.

"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

It seems like there's been quite a bit of crosstalk on this thread....so even distilling the basic principle of USB transfer from Android phone to PC hasn't sunken in:-)

Tom, I can sympathize with the difficulty in navigating a phone: from what I remember about Android is that settings can be quite a bit different depending on phone brand, OS version, and even phone carrier. If you want help with your phone, perhaps we can find specific screenshots if you let us know your phone model and carrier.

Thanks, but honestly, I'm not interested in spending any more effort with this.

I can already get my photos from computer to phone, and vice versa. . But it takes a couple of minutes to do so. . The whole reason I engaged in this thread is because I am unwilling to spend any more minutes than absolutely necessary transferring images, and wanted a drag & drop or copy & paste solution ..... because I am too impatient and lazy to spend more than a few seconds at the task.

So the only reason I wanted to findi an internet-free transfer method was to satisfy my impatience and laziness. . So if finding an easy, quick solution takes many minutes to figure out and implement, then that defeats the entire purpose, doesn't it?

The whole thing would be kinda nice to be able to do, but isn't worth expending any time or effort to figure out. . Most things in life are that way ...... if they take time or mental effort, then they just aren't worth pursuing.

Sorry, and I appreciate your helpful attitude.

.

Yup, it bothers me that in spite of being one of the earliest adopters of PCs and of cell phones, almost every time I plug in the USB cable to transfer images from phone to computer (for editing), I have to read the manual or consult the web...it is that 'easy' (NOT) to find within the UI of the phone!

I just did it, and it took me a few minutes to rediscover where it is hidden!
On the notifications window, (where it notifies about incoming messages, emails, etc...) if I scroll to the Bottom of that page, it mentions that it is 'Charging this device by USB v'
If I touch the downcaret, I am presented the 'Other options', and if I touch that, one of the choices presented is 'Use USB for'...'File transfer'

I'm involved with IT and used to spending time figuring out how to set things up. Most recently it was using Github (a file sharing service for developers) and the Mac terminal. It was awhile ago now that I was using Android (over 3 years)....but I think all I had to do was set USB transfer once: then I had access to its file folders anytime I plugged in the USB. So usually it just takes a little bit of patience initially.

I do like figuring out the ins and outs of what I have...sometimes it makes things efficient or actually works. Like I couldn't believe that when I first setup my Mac, I couldn't sign into Apple TV, Music, or Podcast. Apple support couldn't help either since it was a newly reported bug. But I found a solution that required getting into terminal and writing out commands. I've been learning more Unix to be able to set permissions, see hidden folders, generate password keys, etc.

I'm the complete opposite. I do most my reading on an e-reader (and can look up dictionary and wikipedia articles if on WiFi). I recently also got a smart clock to wake up to and ask Alexa about news, weather, or music to play. I may break down and buy a Ring to also get surveillance video. You sometimes need apps within apps to have access to features....about the only smart device I *don't* think I'm getting anytime soon is a smart refrigerator (not too hard for me to look through my fridge to decide what to throw out and make a shopping list). I don't think I'd last long to not be on the grid:-)

The mechanics of HOW to accomplish that can be very OBTUSE, even if you understand the process!!! See my last message, to illustrate how obtuse...

It is not good enough for the manufacturers that the ice maker is the most common point of failure in modern refrigerators, to keep the repair industry alive and thriving.
They had to add electronic smarts to the refrigerator, as an additional point of failure, and/or as a stimulus to today's 'gotta-own-the-latest-version-gadget' consumer attitudes! So now you can probably download apps to make your refrigerator talk to Alexa or Siri or Google Assistant or Microsoft Cortana, and then want to buy the latest refrigerator so it can show Netflix on its built in 14" LCD in the front of the door, so it can fail and need repairs, too.

One thing I have learned, with All or Any items with a Menu, to go through Every item and Sub item in the Menu before using the Phone, Camera or whatever.. My new 90D was a nightmare having come from Leica digital cameras that are to say the least very minimal in both Menu's and usage.. L

I had to replace my old fridge a year ago. After reading that Samsungs were prone to having draining issues with the ice maker...I avoided the brand. But hey, at least if you get a smart Samsung fridge....it can back up your food item preferences for the new replacement and the advertisers they sell to:-)

Yes, what I meant with principle was the basic concept of enabling USB transfer. I also previously indicated that I remember the Android interface being different by brand, OS version, and carrier. Even though the iPhone series might not be as feature rich....at least I think the interface can be more consistent since its one hardware and software brand.

.

see my post at the end of page one. It's not a setting, it is a pop up in notifications and it only pops up when you connect your phone.

Seriously this is three pages of some of the most elaborate yet in-elegant fixes for a simple problem of not knowing what to set in the Androids notification menu when the phone is attached via USB.
